Hello,
I'm new on here. I am a descendent from the area of Luster County. My grandparents were 2nd generation from Norway. Olaus Johnson Ottum aka Olaus "J" Ottum and Thea Olava Hustad. My dad did a lot of genealogy and I have a huge chart which he transcribed the information from Luster County History (5 volumes) by Lars Oyane. I would love to hook up with someone who knows this genealogy and could share things with me. I am totally confused by the records and don't really know where to go. I'd also like to fill in other lines and get stories and pictures, etc. instead of just names on a chart. Some of the other names on my chart are Lerum, Kilen, Svenstraedet, Notevsa (Eric Ellingson Notevsa actually. I have one transcribed record about him in my files. My grandparents grew up and lived in Buffalo County Wisconsin. Thanks for any replies:-)

I suggest you contact the Luster County Historywriter, which have a thorough knowledge of the region, and could guide you in the right direction.
I've sent you his email address.

Marsha, I think that you might also be able to use some of the online sites to further your knowledge of both Norway and your ancestors. For one thing Luster is referred to as a municipality and is in the fylke (county) of Sogn og Fjordane. Here is a link to a website that has a lot of information on Norwegian Genealogy. This link shows a map of the county of Sogn og Fjordane with Luster included. By scrolling down the page you can also find other useful information, including a link to the books called Bygdebøker. If you click on Luster you will find a reference to the Bygdebok that your father used to document your family history. There are other useful links in this page that you might be able to use to make some sense out of the data you have.

Your family is quite well described on various Family Trees on Ancestry.com. Ancestry.com is a subscription site and so might not be readily available to you. However the data listed there and the people who own those various trees might provide you with the kind of information you are looking for. Also the Bygdebok I referred to above might contain pictures of the farms in Norway. I notice that most of the trees reference the father of

Olaus Johnson Ottum
Birth 7 Nov 1871 in Modena, Buffalo, Wisconsin, United States
Death 24 Aug 1947 in Mondovi, Buffalo, Wisconsin, United States

as

Johannes Johannesen
Birth 21 October 1834 in Luster, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway

Here is a link to his birth record. Look at record #130.

I wonder if you are not the owner of the Ottum/Castlebury Tree on Ancestry.com. If so you already have far more information on your ancestors than the typical poster to this website. This website on Ancestry.com is owned by MKO1957 and contains the ancestors of Eric Ellingson that seem to go back to Elling Rasmusson and Maren Tollefsdatter. Their marriage is posted here and is the fourth entry on the right hand page. The year is 1733 and is a lot further back in time than most people can go. I am not sure what information it is that you do not already have or could not get on your own.

Also are you the owner of this family tree which covers in great detail at least several of the names you have listed.

Thanks evrryone. Yes, i am the owner of these avcounts that were mentioned. I inherited, from my dad, lots of information but I don't really understand it all when I try to verify what he wrote and I just would like to learn more about their lives, etc. I also habe lines that don't go back so far. We owe most of the credit to Lars Oyanr eho actally visitrd my parents years ago and my father was able to purchase 5 volumes of L uster history from him! The books are back in Minnesota though, and I'min California. Isee that there is a link! I will be in Mn for my mom's birthday (85) this next month and will br excited to be closer to my Norwegian American roots then. Thanks so much for all the links and suggestions! I haven't tried working on this line for awhile sincr I've been concentrating on my mom's southern US side. Thanks again!

Sorry for the sloppy post. I'm using a nook keyboard. Will be more careful on further posts so they will be more readable.

Marsha,

This website might be a good starting point for you to increase your knowledge of the information you have that apparently was passed down to you by your father. Spend some time digging through all of the various sections and your knowledge level of Norwegian genealogy will be greatly increased. If after spending some time at this site, you have some specific questions you can post them here and perhaps we can answer them.
