I am trying to trace my great grandfather's genealogy in Norway. Edward Hansen was born in Horten, Norway around 1863. His first recorded history in South Africa was from 1888 and he died in East London, SA, in 1932. He married Edith Frances Wright around 1890. Any feedback would be very very welcome!

Could Oluf Edvard Hansen, born Sept 2 1864, be a candidate?
See #65.

Family in 1865.

His father was Hans Ingvard Jensen, this should be confirmed by the marriage record where fathers name usually is given.

Are you familiar with Norwegian parish registers? They are the best source to search. Horten is in Vestfold fylke (county) and it's registers are mounted online at the Norwegian Digitalarkivet.

On this page there are 3 Edvard, sons of men named Hans, born in Horten. #27 is the Oluf Edvart, recorded as Jensen (even though his father is named Hans) mentioned by Einar above and #20 Edvart Alexander, recorded as Paulson, #22 Karl Edvard Eriksen. All are born in 1864-65 and these are their confirmation records:

Source information: Vestfold county, Horten, Parish register copy nr. 4 (1878-1887), Confirmation records 1879, page 139.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7775&idx_id=7775&uid=ny&idx_side=-148

Since you don't have an exact date of birth (you said about 1863)you may want to search through the registers yourself and harvest all those confirmed containing the first name Edvart born for a period of time before and after 1863, to be sure you have the right group of folks.

Since your great grandfather was born around 1863, perhaps he will be listed in the 1865 Norwegian Census. The NHDC site is user friendly for English speakers. If you enter Ed and Hans and click on Vestfold and then click on search you will find 71 candidates. However only 2 are listed as having been born in Horten. Both named Edevart, one born in 1861 and one born in 1863. You can click on the little house on the left to see the residents of this domicile.

I have checked some literature in the library, Horten and there are two persons (registered) from Horten who emigrated to South Africa in a periode from around 1860 to 1910. They both emigrated closer to 1900 (and the names are totally different)
But of course your Edward could have been registered emigrating to another country, but ended up i South Africa (and since he was a sailor, that is probably the explanation).
Statistics tell that in the periode from 1887-1889 many people (relatively) emigrated from Horten.

Oluf Edvardīs father (Hans Ingvald Jensen, mentioned by eibache and also by jkmarler) was also a sailor (probably in the navy)
