I would appreciate it if someone could translate for me the birth and death record for Hans Hansen Pillarvigen.

Birth can be found at: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_id=9247. page 128, 1st column, 2nd record

Death can be found at: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_id=8918. page 339, #36.

Thank you or reading this.

The 2nd baptismal record in the 1st column in 1796 is for a Hans Guttormsen - i.e. the father of the child named Hans was Guttorm Olsen - see here.

You'l find this Hans and his parents in 1801 here.

The death record is for a retired schoolteacher Hans Hansen, 65 years old, who had been living in the schoolhouse at Sell. He died April 22 and was burried May 1 1863.

From the marriage record for Hans Hansen, Pillervigen he should have been born approx 1799, see #5 - marriage Oct 16 1825, he was 26 years old.

From the 1801 census Hans Hansen was 4 years old, i.e. born approx 1797, see 1780.

Record for confirmation of the brothers Ĝsten and Hans Hansen Pillerwigen, see 7th and 8th record in left column. They were 15 and 14 years old respectively. Hans should be born approx 1797, same as in the 1801 census.

Very rare name Pillarvigen(Pillar bay) named after a local fish Pillar.

Schoolteacher Hans Hansen Piller-/Pillarvigen 1798-1863 was a wellknown collector of folklore and famous fairy tales as:
- Mestertyven (Master thief)
- Askeladden
- Gullfugelen (Golden bird)
- Goddag mann ĝkseskaft (Non sequitur), an irrelevant often humorous comment to a statement
- Veslefrikk med fela Little Frick and the fiddle
were ca 1842 told by him to the folklore collector Asbjĝrnsen

Did not mention that the death record for Hans Hansen has a note saying "Den navngjetne skolemeisteren" - the renowned schoolteacher.

Sorry I have not checked this forum in a few days. Hans Hansen was my gg grandfather. I know a little about his history as a schoolteacher and collector of folklore. Any suggestions where I can learn more? I understand he wrote an autobiography. Does anyone know if it still exists and available. The bible he presented to his daughter Marit on her 18th birthday is in possession of a second cousin of mine in this country. That was the long translation you provided, Einar, a week or so ago. I was in Norway several years ago and was able to view his tombstone in the church cemetery. I can not however find his birth record.

Thank you both so much for all the information you provide.

Interesting and facinating to read that Hans Pillarvigen´s former student Paul Botten-Hansen took him to a banquet in Oslo where he met Ibsen, L.L.Daae, Vinje and Welhaven
