My Ancestors were farmers and fishermen, I wonder if it would be possible to get pictures of the fishing boats they would have sailed on in the 1700 and 1800's. Thanks in advance. Wanda

Dronen, Sund, Hordaland and
Bussesund, Sund, Hordaland, and
Bergen.

Hope that helps. Wanda

Harstad;
These boats are developed from the viking ships, and there were so many types and models, all adapted to local conditions.
Because of the rough weather in the N. Atlantic the boats build in N. Norway were among the best.
The two most wellknown fishing boats in Northern Norway is Nordlandsbåt and see here

And perhaps the most famous fishing boat in N. Norway in the past, Fembøringen

The building of a Fembøring
My grandfather b. 1885 in N.Norway was almost every spring on "Lofotfisket" the cod fishing in Lofoten, on a Fembøring.

A bigger type of Fembøring, also a small cargo ship, called Storfembøring

I am not sure about the main fishing boats in Hordaland, but in Rogaland and half of Horadaland four main types were (source Wikipedia);
Strandebarmer, Hardangerbåt, Oselvertype and Kvinnheradsbåt.
I can see if I can get some photos for you tomorrow.

I would appreciate any help you can give. My brother's 73rd birthday is coming up and so far I have pictures for him of most of the ships that our ancestors traveled on to America, so it would great if I could have a picture of the boats our Ancestors fished on. Thank you for any help you can give. Wanda

You'l find pictures of fishingboats and fishermen from the periode 1880 1920 here.

Oselver was the main fishing boat in Hordaland. Their size would be 16 to 26 feet. Pictures of how the boats are buildt and a video of the use for racing today see this.

More info here.
