This Olaf has been linked to before within this topic. This is copied from Anton's post on page 1:
Name: Oluf Burness Event: Census Event Date: 1900 Event Place: ED 191 Gordon Township Osakis village, Todd, Minnesota, United States Birth Date: Apr 1868 Birthplace: Norway Relationship to Head of Household: Head Father's Birthplace: Norway Mother's Birthplace: Norway Race or Color (Standardized): White Gender: Male Marital Status: Married Years Married: 8 Estimated Marriage Year: 1892 Immigration Year: 1883
Head Oluf Burness M 32 Norway Wife Sigrid Burness F 30 Norway Son Severin Burness M 11 Minnesota Daughter Ida C Burness F 8 Minnesota Son Gilman O Burness M 5 Minnesota
The son Severin Buness was born about 1889 or two years before the marriage of Sigrid and Olaf, so his parentage isn't perfectly clear. He may be a child Sigrid and Olaf had before they married, or he may be Sigrid's child with an unknown partner or a child of Olaf and an unknown partner or even an adoptive child of the parents.
Sigrid apparently dies in the early 1900s and Olaf eventually marries again to a Finnish woman and possibly has a child with her. (My memory about this is a bit foggy)
Here is Olaf J. Buness' headstone at findagrave: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=buness&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GSsr=41&GRid=113715497&df=all&
Which family has records about Olaf? I see you have posted a birthdate which matches the birthdate for Olaf in the Norwegian parish register of Eidsvoll. His birthdate surmised from the various census records here differs from 1864. Perhaps the family, whichever one it is, has some other records? |

I think this is the Anton Johnson in the 1900 census that you mentioned at findagrave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Johnson&GSiman=1&GScid=2431695&GRid=91947388&
Lara (as Laura) appears to be in the same cemetery as well as a number of the children.
Here is a link to the familysearch.org transcription of Anton C. Johnson's death record in 1942. His father's name is given as Christian Bunes. & mother as Olivia:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FD7R-HTC
Here is Anton's family in the 1930 census in which son Fred is listed as Buness:

Here is Anton's family in the 1920 census in which son Fred is listed as Johnson:

From genealogybank:
Pilot-Independent, The (Walker, MN) - Friday, March 5, 2004 "Deceased Name: Fred Joseph Buness Jr. of Harlingen, Texas, and formerly of Laporte and Bemidji, Minn., died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
He was born March 5, 1930, in Laporte, Minn., to Fred and Oresa (Fairbanks) Buness Sr. He was raised and educated in the Laporte area. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1947 and retired after 23 years as a master sergeant. He married Ruth Kuwatzka in 1962 in Germany.
He then worked for the U.S. Public Health System in Oklahoma for several years. After retiring, he moved to Bemidji and lived there for five years, then moved to Harlingen. He loved to do all sorts of projects in his shop. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign of Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion. He was a perpetual member of Will Rodgers Masonic Lodge 53 of Claremore, Okla.
He is survived by two daughters, Ann Buness and Barney Johnson, both of Granger, Iowa; six sisters, Glenyce (Harlem) Fossen of Grand Rapids, Minn., LaRayne Ourada of Denver, Colo., Betty (Clifford) Premo and Yvonne Christopherson, both of Laporte, Lynne (Myron) Schnickels of Lindstrom, Minn., and Sharon Unander-Miller of St. Peter, Minn.; two brothers, Dale (Carol) of Laporte and Richard of California; one sister-in-law Wendy Buness of Oregon; special friend Marion Beecroft of Harlingen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth in 1987; his parents; one brother, Gary Buness; and nephews Michael Johnson and Curt Christopherson.
Funeral services were held Feb. 27 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji with Pastor Harley Clyde officiating. Interment was at Evergreen-Hendrickson Township Cemetery in rural Laporte. Military honors were provided by the Cass Lake American Legion.
Memorials are preferred to Rio Grande Shriner's Club.
Cease Family Funeral Homes handled arrangements. "
It may be a coincidence but Olaf Buness later settled in Hubbard County or it might be an invisible thread.
Here is the listing for Olaf in the online Minnesota Death Index: BUNESS, OLAF J. Date of Birth: na Place of Birth: na Mother Maiden Name: na certid# 1939-MN-006023 Date of Death: 02 Jul 1939 County of Death: HUBBARD
Apparently Anton had 2 sons who adopted Buness as their surname, also. Carl you mentioned before and another possibly Fred Joseph Buness b. 1901.
From Duluth News-Tribune 24 July 1919: "Too many Johnsons, claims man tired of name.
A hearing on the application of Carl Johnson to have his name changed to Carl Henry Buness will be held in district court Saturday. The petitioner claims Johnson is such a common name that he has difficulty in receiving his mail and confusion in business and personal matters often result because many other men have the same name.
Johnson said that his father's name was Buness at one time and then was changed to Johnson. The petitioner says he prefers the name of Buness."

Another mystery to solve...
Severin's side of the family has been a mystery, along with his suspicious disappearance from the Van Hook, North Dakota area, possibly around 1922. Van Hook was a fair bit south of Minot, and is now underwater as a result of a big hydro dam project. All records were moved to a place nearby called New Town. Severin had two brothers, Melvin and Gilman, who at one time ran a hotel in Minot, North Dakota with Severin. It has since been torn down.
Any suggestions on where I could look/start looking to find any information on Severin? He seems to have vanished without a trace. Perhaps he didn't want to be found.

Severin's son Palmer: Obituaries (03/03/10) Anne Buness January 14, 1918 October 31, 2009 The family of Anne Buness wishes to announce her peaceful passing on October 31, 2009 at age 91 in the presence of her adoring husband of 60 years Palmer Norman Buness at the Oak Bay Lodge nursing home in Victoria. B.C. Survived by sisters Frances Gordon in Vancouver and Julie Kusmer in Vernon, her children Richard Buness, Duncan, and Sharon (Buness) Hall, Victoria, B.C.; her grandchildren Jamison Hall, Jahrum Oakes, and Clara Oakes and many nieces and nephews. Sadly pre-deceased by daughter Joanne Norma (Buness) Oakes in 2003. Anne was a modern thinker, feminist, committed environmentalist, social activist and long time contributor to her community through the Unitarian Universalist Church, the World Federalists of Canada, the David Suzuki Foundation, the NDP, the walking group and historical Society at Shawnigan Lake, BC, and the Brentwood Elementary School PTA, among others. One of her proudest moments was when she was asked to open a section of the Trans-Canada Trail at Shawnigan Lake. She was a life-long organic gardener and recycler, long before most people were aware of their importance. The daughter of Polish immigrants, John and Karolina Golembioski, and one of 8 sisters, Anne was born in Smokey Lake, Alberta and raised in Cooks Creek, Manitoba, where her father did mixed farming. A Veteran of the Second World War, she met husband Palmer while serving as a Canadian Air Force postal clerk. At the time of her enlistment, prior to Canada's more enlightened multi-cultural policies, the Military changed her surname to Gould. She will be greatly missed by family, friends and her community. The family respectfully requests donations in lieu of flowers to the Alzheimer's Society or the MS Society. 190542

Obituaries (03/03/10) Palmer Norman Buness February 15, 1913 February 24, 2010 The family of Palmer Norman Buness sadly announces his gentle passing at Oak Bay Lodge, Victoria, on February 24, 2010 at the grand age of 97 years. Late of Shawnigan Lake, BC, he will be sadly missed by the loving children of his 1949 marriage to Anne: Sharon (Buness) Hall of Victoria, BC and Richard (Rick) Buness of Duncan, BC, and the beloved children of his first marriage, Donald Buness, Ottawa, ON, Shirley Marlene Hiltz, Eastern Passage, NS; and Barry Buness, Prince Albert, SK, as well as 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and many friends and neighbours at Shawnigan Lake. Also survived by his sister Billie (Beulah) Dickie, her husband David and nephew Michael, in his home town of Pennant, SK., niece Lois (Yost) Willis and nephew Brian Yost in the USA. Sadly pre-deceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Anne (nee Golembioski), on October 31, 2009, his daughter Joanne Norma (Buness) Oakes of Lillooet in 2003 and sister Grace (Buness) Yost, late of Spokane, WA. Palmer and Anne met near the end of WWII in Winnipeg during their military service. Both were proud Veterans and former members of the Shawnigan Lake Legion. They were early supporters of the Unitarian Church in Victoria, and later in Duncan. Palmer was born in Park River, North Dakota, on February 15, 1913, to Severin Buness, a farmer of Norwegian descent and Agness (Agot HanseBraaten) Buness, who had immigrated at 17 from Al, in Hallingdal, Norway. After the mysterious disappearance of Severin in 1922, Agot married Saskatchewan farmer Axel Nelson and in 1927, moved her children to Canada, where they become proud Canadian citizens. In his early life, Palmer worked with draught horses on prairie threshing crews near Pennant SK, and became known as a horse-whisperer. He survived the dirty thirties using his skills as qualified draftsman, fine cabinet-maker, auto mechanic, grain elevator operator, and also helped to construct the Goldfields mine. As young men, he and his friend, aviator Cecil Goddard built three airplanes from spare car parts found behind the local garage. Later, Palmer's genius for innovative thinking in aid of the war effort led to a promotion to plant economy engineer at the CIL cordite plant in Winnipeg, where he'd been hired as a mechanical draftsman. Later, the Canadian Air Force trained him as a radio operator and recognizing his potential, sent him to McMaster University to study mechanical engineering. After the war, he married Anne and ran a CN/CP Tel repeater station at Mile 392, Alaska Highway, where he used reclaimed US Military Quonset huts to build homes for station families. In 1953, they moved to Victoria and then to Brentwood Bay where they raised their family and he worked in electronics on military ships for HMS Dockyard until his retirement in 1972. Palmer's family and many friends will remember him for his warm, gentle, modest nature, his near-genius ability to build or repair almost anything, his beautiful tenor voice, and his musical gifts on classical violin, old-time country fiddle and later the organ and harmonica. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 7th at the Pemberton Memorial Chapel at Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, BC. Please call 250-514-7226 for information. 190546 |

Wow. Thank you very much. I also noticed this section from the 2nd obituary suggesting his whereabouts continued to be a mystery:
Vancouver Island
After the mysterious disappearance of Severin in 1922, Agot married Saskatchewan farmer Axel Nelson and in 1927, moved her children to Canada, where they become proud Canadian citizens.
