We lost track of Severin after he disappeared suspiciously. He was born on Nov 1889 in Minnesota.
His parents were:
Olaf Kristiansen Bunæs, born 08 Apr 1864 in Bunæs, Eidsvoll, Akershus, Norway. Died 1939 in Gordon Twp, Todd, Minnesota, USA.
Sigrid Gudmundsdtr, born 22 Jan 1870 in Stenmo, Stordal, Meraker, Norway. Died 1939 in Gordon twp, Todd County, Minnesota, USA.
Severin married Aagot Tostensdatter Hansebratten on 17 May 1912 in Grand Forks County, ND, USA. She was born 05 Mar 1891, Ål, Hallingdal, Buskerud, Norway. Died 1950 in Saskatchewan, Canada. Aka Agnes Buness, Agatha.
3 children:
Palmer Norman Buness, born 15 Feb 1913, Park River, Walsh County, North Dakota, USA. Died 24 Feb 2010, Oak Bay Lodge, Victoria, BC.
Grace Eleanor Buness, 25 May 1914, Fordville, Walsh, North Dakota, United States. Died 11 Feb 2007, Spokane, Spokane, Washington, United States.
Beulah Buness, 03 Mar 1917, North Dakota, USA. Death unknown.
Severin's side of the family has been a mystery, along with his suspicious disappearance from the Van Hook, North Dakota area, possibly around 1922. Van Hook was a fair bit south of Minot, and is now underwater as a result of a big hydro dam project. All records were moved to a place nearby called New Town. Severin had two brothers, Melvin and Gilman, who at one time ran a hotel in Minot, North Dakota with Severin. It has since been torn down.
Have scanned census info, social security and more.
He may have wanted to disappear, so not really sure where else I can go for info.
Thanks. Kevin |

Severin has been the subject of a lot of searching through the years. But there may not be anything new to offer.
His sister Ida Setness died in 1925, has her obituary been searched for? If perhaps he is mentioned as a survivor living in a specific place information that might be helpful. Ditto with the obituaries of of each of the brothers as well as his father.
I notice in your write-up that you give a death date for Sigrid, Severin's mum as 1939. Olaf is listed as a widower in the 1910 census so it's likely that she died between 1905- 1910, likely in Minnesota. Olaf married a second time to Regina ____.
The brother John Melvin was married in North Dakota: BUNNESS, MELVIN NELSON, IRENE 1927-08-23 RENVILLE
and he and his wife were residents of Renville county North Dakota in the 1930 census. So some members of the family lingered in Dakota.
Brother Gilman Oscar was also married by 1920 (wife not named) as he is found in service that year and listed that way in the census. In the 1925 city directory of Seattle his wife is named Helen. Gilman was a "mess" sergeant in his servie and seemed to follow cooking for a living after that.
Gilman enlisted in the Army in 1917 and is married. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7S9M-LZZM
In 1921 both Melvin and Severin were named as plaintiffs in a lawsuitt against the railroad. Melvin received about $300 compensation for his trouble but no mention was made about any share that Severin might have attained.
Agnes and the children were living in Mountrail county North Dakota in 1925, so the move to Canada came after that. Agnes is also mentioned in the Bismarck North Dakota paper as having been treated two times in 1924 at a Bismarck hospital. Her address is given both times as Van Hook.
Olaf's 2nd marriage also in Todd county: TODD MK-201 06/11/1918 BURNESS, OLOF J STRANDIN, REGINA IRENE |

Here is an obituary for the daughter Beluah, according to which the mother Aagot remarried some time around 1928. (Also according to this FAG-endtry.)
Beulah (Billie) Dickie, formerly of Pennant, SK and resident of the Bentley in Swift Current passed away peacefully on Friday, April 9th, 2018 at Cypress Regional Hospital with family at her side. Billie was the third child of Severin and Aagot Buness, both of whom emmigrated from Norway, and she was born in Minot, North Dakota on March 3, 1917. She spent her young childhood in Van Hook, North Dakota. Due to unfortunate circumstances regarding the loss of her father, her mother later married Axel Nelson of Pennant, SK and at age 11, along with her mother, older brother Palmer and sister Grace, she moved to Pennant to begin a new life in Canada in 1928. Her first impression of Pennant was not a happy one. Being accustomed to travelling all over a much larger Van Hook on her roller skates, tiny Pennant's gravel streets and wooden sidewalks meant that her skates were hung up for good. She soon came to love Pennant and it's people, and became very involved in the community. While attending school, she was very athletic, and loved to play softball, and she became a pretty decent curler. In 1938, on a blistering hot Aug. 4th, she married Dave Dickie. Together, they were involved in the community life of Pennant and area. Both sang in the United Church choir, and Billie taught Sunday School, and worked with the girls in CGIT. They curled together, and won curling prizes on a regular basis. She was an excellent home cook and baker, and whenever there was a community event like the annual Sports Day, Fowl Supper or for the concession at the curling rink, people would wait for her her pie or cake donations, which sold out immediately, as her baking was so good! She also baked and decorated many, many wedding cakes for brides, and her wedding cakes were not only delicious, but were true works of art. She was a skilled seamstress, and made garments for herself and others, made all the drapery in her homes, and even upholstered furniture. Billie was very interested in and involved in politics for many years, local, provincial and national, travelling in province and twice to Ottawa for political conventions. On the local level, she was very active in campaigning for, and selling debentures to support the construction of Pennant's water and sewer system. Having been a ball player in her youth, she became and avid baseball fan, particularily of the Toronto Blue Jays, in later life. On the occasion of her 100th birthday, she received official letters from politicians of all stripe, and even Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, but the only one framed and on her wall is a congratulating letter from The Toronto Blue Jays! Beginning in 1967, Billie and Dave started travelling to Arizona for a time in the winter, first with close friends, Lorne and Merle Croteau for just a few weeks. They found life in the Valley of the Sun to be preferrable to Saskatchewan's harsh winter and in 1969 they were able to invest in a "manufactured home" on a lot in a mobile home park, and from that time, they spent winters in Mesa for thirty years. After a bad traffic accident in Mesa in 2001, in which Billie was badly injured, they decided that it was best to stay in Pennant. No longer being away for the winter, they became very involved and active with the Pennant Happy Gang, the Pennant seniors group. They played cards, had potluck suppers, Friday afternoon coffee klatches and thoroughly enjoyed the commpanionship of all the folks who had a hand in making Pennant the wonderful community it is. Declining health made a move to The Bentley a necessity in April of 2010. Dave passed away in May of 2011, and Billie continued to live there alone, but within the Bentley community, and in close daily contact with her longtime friend Merle. Billie is survived by her son, Michael and his wife Honey of Pennant. Donations in her memory will be gratefully accepted by the Pennant Happy Gang c/o Box 222, Pennant, SK S0N 1X0. A receipt will be mailed upon request. At Billie's request, no funeral will be held. Internment of her ashes will take place at a later date beside her husband Dave, in Pennant Cemetery.

Severin was born on 20 Nov 1889 and baptized 29 Nov 1889 to parents named Wallace Ackley and Sigri Gudmundson as found in the Salem Lutheran Church records in Osakis. (the records are actually for a congregation called Sauk Valley Norske Evangelical Lutherske, his baptism is #15 on page 6 --image 564-- in the Ancestry ELCA database under Salem in Osakis, Minnesota)
There is a complicated ecclesiastical history in Osakis that figures into Buness story with a fragmentation of the records. Salem Lutheran was founded in 1906 from a union of the Gordon Lutheran church and Stordal Lutheran.
Severin was using the Ackley last name in 1905 census in Todd county, Minnesota.
Wallace Ackley was born 1866 in Plainview Minnesota to parents David and Selina Chapman Ackley. In 1880 and 1885 censuses Wallace (actually William Wallace) lived with his parents in Todd county, Minnesota. Later Wallace lived in Billings county, North Dakota and in 1932 in Bismarck, North Dakota. William Wallace Ackley died in Victoria, British Columbia 17 Feb 1963
William Wallace Ackley married Mary Wakefield in 1893 in Yellow Medicine county. They had a daughter named Hazel who married Joseph Sparrow in Grand Forks ND 14 Feb 1910. Later Hazel and her husband lived in Yorktown Saskatchewan.
Hazel died in British Columbia on 21 July 1979 according to her FAG: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/209978336/hazel-mae-sparrow |

This is getting complicated. Here is the marriage license for Severin Buness and Agnes Braaten. Are they the same as Severin Ackley and Aagot Tostensdatter Hansebratten? |

In the other topic on these people it was mentioned that Severin was born about 2 years prior to his parents' marriage. I said it could be one of three things that they had him before they got married, or that his mother had him with another partner before her marriage to Olaf, and the 3rd thing is that Olaf had him with a different partner before he married Sigri.
So Severin was illegitimate since there appears to be no marriage between Ackley and Sigri. Severin was working out of the home in 1900, aged 11 and goes by Ackley in the 1905 census. Perhaps Olaf was more bothered by Severin than he might have thought?
It sounds like a totally modern story.... |

I do not have any information about the Ackley connection. Do I assume this means that Olaf Bunaes is not Severin's father?

And had a child in 1914.
Grace Elanore Bunes in the U.S., Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Church Records, 1781-1969 Name: Grace Elanore Bunes Baptism Age: 0 Record Type: Baptism Birth Date: 25 May 1914 Baptism Date: 26 Jul 1914 Baptism Place: Sargent, North Dakota, USA Father: Severin Bunes Mother: Anges Bunes Church Name: East Forest River Lutheran Church Location: Fordville, North Dakota
Which fits with the 1920 Census and with Agnes Braaten being the same as Aagot Tostensdatter.
In a tree she is called.

In the 1920 United States Federal Census for Regina I Bunes (I don't know how to post the link outside of Ancestry), it mentions Olaf (50 yrs), Regina (49), Melvin (17) and 5 year old step son Nels E.Strandem (sic).
A lot going on here.

You can use Familysearch for links to many of the records found in Ancestry.com
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MW1T-JT3
You could infer from the Ancestry.com transcription that the mother of Nels is Regina I Bunes and that Olaf is the step-father.

Tell us about Clara....
So far as I can see, there is only reference to Clara and that is the 1905 census.
In MOMS between 1 Jan 1900 and 31 Jan 1910 there are 42 marriages in which the female party is named Clara. Of the 42, there is no mate named Olaf, Oluf, or Olof. During that same time in Todd county, there is no party named Klara getting married.
Of course, they could have nipped off to some other county to be married but Clara's other biographical information seems to match Sigrid's. So it seems more likely that Sigri = Sadie= Clara. |
