Lynda, I live in Houghton County and there are many Pirkola's that live here but no one knows about Kaisa's family before she married Gustaf Pirkola. This is all so confusing. We hvae gone back real far on the Pirkola side of the family and now want to find out about Kaisa's family. I do feel that Brita Kaisa is our relative who left on Trondheim and arrived in Houghton. Now I have to try to find more information. The name thing is confusing--different given names and surnames. I am pretty new with researching geneology but I am determined to find information on my family. Thank you for all of your help I am going to check out all of these sites. Julie Pirkola Harris

This must be Kaisa Karhula's sister:
#2, Eva Lovise
Born 22.12.1874, Chr 28.02.1875
Parents: Kven, farmer and fisherman Peter Petersen Karhula b.1825/1835 and wife Kaisa Magdalena Mikkelsdatter b.1843
Source: Finnmark county, Sør-Varanger, Parish register (official) nr. 2 (1873-1877), Birth and baptism records 1875, page 14.

Lovise Karhula (22) from Varanger, Finnmark emigrated to Hancock, Houghton, Michigan on 30.03.1898. Ticket paid in America.

This could be Eva Lovise in the 1900-census for ED 184 Hancock village, east side, Houghton, Michigan, United States:
Head Eugene Langier M 39 Italy
Wife Louize Langier F 27 Norway

But: She is listed as born July 1873, and immigration 1895...
A daughter Agnes is born 1904. The family later moved to St Louis, Minnesota.

The one below seems more correct!

No, and I can't really answer that...
Kven people were a minority group, and the term "kven" were often used as an insult or a word of abuse.
Maybe the children were in care by other people? Or the census-taker didn't make notes of the younger people.

A = Sør-Varanger, Finnmark, Norway
B = Kittilä, Lappland, Finland

Your link goes to confirmation record from 1876? Jackie showed the chr link for Britha Kaisa further up. Strange that he is named Nilsen, and Petersen when Eva Lovise was born. But both these names must be Norwegianized... being born in Kittilä, Lappland, he would not be named neither Petersen nor Nilsen...
There is a reference to Salmijärvi when Britha Kaisa was born, and a ref. to Klostervand when Eva Lovise was born, Both these names refer to the lake Svanevatnet in Sør-Varanger, on the border between Norway and Russia.
