Hi i'm new this forum so not really sure how it works - apologies in advance! I'm looking for information about my great-grandfather Sven(d) Olsen, who was born in Brevig. I am unsure of his date of birth but he moved to Hull and had several children to Sarah Atkinson(Lord). His children were named: Caleb Lord (Olsen), Mary Lord (Olsen)Catherine Olsen and Olaff Olsen. Catherine was the only one born in Brevig (in 1876) and the rest were born in Hull. So I'm presuming he came over from Norway after 1876. Does anyone know any information about which ship he came on and when he travelled? Are there passenger lists I could view? If anyone is able to find anything out about Sven(d) Olsen's parents, it would be very much appreciated :) |

It could possibly be - The only census I found them all on was 1881 and it says there that Catherine was 2 so your date sound more like it. Not sure now where the other was from. This census lists a child called Chilobie Olsen, aged 5 in 1881 but there is nothing more. Thanks so much for your help :)

That is the information I had, although on an 1881 census it states Catherine is 2 years old. That puts her birth at about 1879 so it's all a bit misleading. All the children are listed there too - with the addition of Chilobie Olsen aged 5 (so born about 1875 ish).

Chilobje Olsen is Caleb Lord (05 Oct 1875 - 23 Jun 1912), married to Minnie Edith Jarvis. 6 children, see this
That explains the "Kilop" in Sarah's name at Kristine's chr record. Kilop is not a Norwegian name, so I was wondering where that name came from. It must come from Chilobie/Caleb. Maybe Sarah's father was named Chilobie or Caleb?
#85, Svend Olsen Born: 15 Jul 1850 Christening: 04 Aug 1850, Seljord, Telemark, Norway Parents: Ole Svendsen & Gunnild Olsdr, Venaas farm

Svend and his parents moved from Seljord to Brevik between 1850-1853. His younger siblings Gunil (1853), Anna (1859), Inger Kathrine (1861) and Hans Olves (1864) are all born in Brevik.

Thankyou Jwiborg - I already the majority of the information provided in the link. That is the website I got it from but had no idea that Chilobie was the same person as Caleb! I also wasn't sure of Svend's parents so that's really helped :) |

Brevik became a flourishing trade - and shipping centre after the city got its town rights in 1845. The first ships to England with natural ice started in 1850. Trademen with a vision saw what possibilities there was in the ice trade, and a total of 94 ships were registered in Brevik between 1860-1870. England was the dominant market for Norwegian ice.
Most of the exported ice was used to preserve fresh food, especially fish and other seafood. A big portion of the ice was also used by the beer breweries. The light lager beer had to be chilled in cold basements. A minor portion of the exported ice was used to manufacture luxury items in the big European cities, like ice cream and sorbet.
Brevik was one of the main ports in Norway for exporting ice to the Uk. Also the lumber yard industry was big in the area, exporting timber to the Uk and the rest of Europe.
Svend Olsen was a sailor, and he could very well have been a seaman aboard one of these ice ships. Census-1881 says Occupation = "Seaman ("Mcht)". I assume Mcht could be Mechanist, machinist..? On the other hand, most of these ships were sailing vessels, no engines aboard. It could have been a steam ship. I doubt you will find him in the emigrant lists, since they mostly cover emigrants going to the US/Canada, and Oceania.

Thankyou - it's really nice to get some information on the background of life back then. I did find a few Svend Olsens aboard different ships but can't really work out which one he might be. I agree that the majority of vessels I seem to hear about headed for the US. Sarah must have gone back to Norway with him at some point because her first child was born in Hull, her second in Brevik and the rest back in Hull.
It's a shame nobody had invented online blogs back then!! |

You are amazing!! Thankyou
It starts getting confusing when the same Christian names keep cropping up but I guess it was quite common then to name children after parents/other members of the family.
I'm so glad I posted a message on here...I was stuck with my tree and you have really helped.
