I am looking for a ship that carried a "John Johnson Helfstad (?)" age about 37 or 38, and his wife Helene or Helena who was at least 5 years older than he, and his son or sons: Peter, born in 1863 and Ole, born in 1864. He arrived in the port of Detroit in June of 1869 and ended up in La Crosse Wiscconsin. Could Helfstad be an Anglisized name for a different Norwegian spelling that sounds about the same. Could it be a farm or place in Norway from which he came? |

Typically a classically constructed Norwegian name is 1. the given or Christian name John 2. who is the son of John or Johnson 3. who is living on Helfstad (or some other farm)
As long as a person lived on a particular farm they would carry that farm name as part of their name.
What is your source for Helfstad? Was it a printed document in fractur styled (Gothic?) typeface? If it was the latter it may be a misinterpretation of one form of an "s" for "f."
Looking at the 1865 Norwegian census transcription online there didn't appear to be a farm named Helfstad. There are 3 entries in Nordmændene i Amerika for folks who carried the name "Helstad" in which the "s" is printed with the "f" appearing form.
The 2 for whom an origin is given are Ole Helstad who came from Lom in Gudbrandsdal and Simon Helstad who came from Rendalen, Østerdalen. |

Ole Peter Johansen Birth: 24 May 1864 Christening: 26 Jun 1864, Østre Toten, Oppland, Norway Parents: Johan Jensen & Helene Hansdr, Schjefstadeie
Hans Christian Johansen Birth: 11 Dec 1866 Christening: 20 Jan 1867, Østre Toten, Oppland, Norway Parents: Johan Christian Jensen & Helena Hansdr, Alfstadkalveløkken
"John Johnson Helfstad" must be Johan Christian Jensen, living on the farm Alfstadkalveløkken in 1867. A lot of people from Østre Toten, Oppland emigrated to La Crosse, Wis.

Census-1900 for La Crosse says that Helena is born April 1832, John born May 1841, and that they married in 1864.
Ole Peter is born May 1864. Where is he in Census-1900?

Ole Peter became known as Peter in th 1880 census. Helena has born 5 children, 4 are living. Since baby Hans Christian died, if the 1900 count is right then Peter must be living somewhere in 1900. |

Thank you all... I will pursue your suggestions. As I responded to one of you...Marler... I think - I have copies of John Johnson renouncing all allegiance to "Charles 15 King of Norway" on November 8, 1870 in La Crosse WI and on this one, he signed it with his mark (X) and another later document which he did not write, where the "Helfstad" comes from: a purchase of a burial plot on January 1882. I have looked at the written document and it is possible, because of the way the author of the document wrote that the "H" could be an "St" or "Stelfstad"...because the writer signs his name as S. S. Burton and the "S's " appear very much like the beginning of the "H"... I will follow up on the ideas. I had copies of the census records and information that Anton A. Johnson's middle name was Alfstad or Alfsted bit did not make that connection nor did I know about Carl giving his mother's name as Helene Christianson... |

Ole Peter Johnson died or was buried January 5, 1882 at the age of 17 years and 7 months, was born in Norway and died of a "wound"... had worked in a saw mill. This has to have been the reason his father was purchasing a cemetery plot in Jan. 1882. |
