I am searching for parents and siblings of Erick Braaten of Adelen Norway. Erick was born November 10, 1847. Records show he immigrated to the US in 1880. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you. |

1875 for census for Aadalen/Ådalen.
ERIK KRISTENSEN KVERNBRAATEN 1847 28 (age) NÆSS (sub parish) SON U (unmarried) "DAGARBEIDER TØMMERHUGGER" DAYLABORER LUMBERJACK, link
Enter the two first columns, write; Erik Kristensen and go (Sett i gang) He was the only Erik Kristensen in Aadalen 1875.
Cant find his em. record, but this is the last info on Erik Kristensen unlike his siblings. More info tomorrow if you want? Do you have the names of his children? Just to compare with the names of his parents/siblinge (Norwegian naming tradition)

Erik Kristensen's parents, Christen Eriksen, Næseie and Kjersti Eriksdatter, Næseie, were married Oct 26 1844, #7.
Christen's father was Erik Olsen and Kjersti's father was Erik Eriksen.
Eric Olsen, his wife and children in 1801.

Thank you!!
I have no information about Erick's siblings or parents to compare your information with, sorry! I only know that he arrived in the US in 1880. His death certificate doesn't mention parents, only that they lived in Norway. I notice that Erick's middle initial on records I have is "C" so that may be "Christian." Am I correct to assume that "Braaten" is the farm he was from and not necessarily his true surname?
Thank you for your help! |

I am almost certain this is the right Erik. His birth record shows a deviation on two days Adelene must be Aadalen (River valley), the closest is farm names as Adelheim, Adelsten, Adelsgaard, Adelberg or the female name Adelene.
Historians in Ådalen has no ino on him after 1875. The migration records from 1880 for Ådalen is missing.
I do not know how Kvernbraaten was spoken in the everyday speech but long farm names were often shortened.
Kvernbraaten, would not that be a difficult name in the US?

North Americans were efficient and often long Norwegian names were broken down to smaller parts
Where did he live in America?
Is this him getting married in Marshall county, Minnesota, twice?: MARSHALL B-409 11/27/1892 BRAATEN, ERIK C SYVERSON, ANNA MARSHALL B-127 3/25/1889 BRAATEN, ERIK C MELUM, TOLINA
from Government Land Office records, Erik C. Braaten got a a regular homestead entry in Marshall County, Minnesota: MN0520__.179 BRAATEN, ERIK C 2/12/1891 6250 MN 5th PM 154N - 044W S½NW¼ 4 Marshall 154N - 044W SW¼NE¼ 4 Marshall 154N - 044W NW¼SE¼ 4 Marshall which puts his land south of Newfolden, Minnesota & near Rosewood, Minnesota.
He would have had to file a declaration of intention to become a citizen. The Declaration of Intentions of the 1880s-1890s era often contain a month and year of landing in US, the name of the port of arrival in US, pieces of information which might be valuable to ascertain if the Erik in Norway is the correct person to match your records here.
Here are some links to Erick C Braaten:
Erik C. Broten in Marshall county, Minnesota 1885, 2 chidren: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQFX-WG9
Erick Braaten and Annie Braaten in Pennington county, Minn in 1895: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MQ6J-FJ9
Eric is assigned 13 /19? Years residence in Minnesota, 3 years 2 months residence in this ed; so either since 1882 or 1876 a resident in Minnesota
Children in Erick Braaten household in Pennington County, Minn in 1895: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-13200-88600-50?cc=1503031&wc=5818955
I couldn't get familysearch to get to Erick in the 1900 census but found him in HeritageQuest.
In 1900 he was named Erick Braaten b. Nov 1847, married 20 years to Annie, he migrated 1880 to US and is a naturalized citizen: census info: 19 June 1900, SD 134, ED 327 sheet 4B line 68 in Norden Township, Red Lake county, Minnesota
By 1910, the head of the household a man named Seaverson, Erik Braaten is listed as stepfather. |

Yes, the Erick I am searching out is the Erick that married Tolina Mellum and Anna Seaverson. My paternal line descends from his marriage with Tolina Mellum and one of their two daughters, named Clara Braaten (my gggrandmother). I am hopeful to find his family of origin and my Norwegian ancestors.
I am so grateful for the information. Many thanks! |

Okay, your Erik was married 3 times, there are 2 daughters in the household in 1885. The oldest was born about 1882 in Minnesota, the youngest about 1884 in Minnesota. Do you know what happened to the girls? |

Olia Larsdatter age 24 just under Erik's name on the migrating list is going to the same place as Erik....Here's a marriage from MOMS:
MOWER C181-2 11/28/1880 CHRISTIANSON, ERICK LARSON, OLIA
Grand Meadow is in Mower county, Minnesota.
So Olia was the mother of a Clara born 1884--is this the same Clara who is your grandmother?
The children in the household in 1895 are all named Braaten and all born in Minnesota: Caroline 14 b. Minn Gelhard 12 Clara 12 John 9 Maria 7 Albert 7 Joseph 4 Emma 2 |
