I was curious if anyone knew what kind of surname "Wattner" is.I also am still looking for the ship Adolph Severin Tonnesen Wattner came to America on. He was in the 1865 Norway census then in the 1870 New York census. If anyone has any info on him or where "Wattner" comes from I would really appreciate it. Thanks

The Wattner could be the remnant of a farm name.It looks as though He was living in Oslo in 1865. In the 1801 farm search there is a Wattnen farm. That would probably be where the name originated.

Wealthy people like the Wærnskjolds (Wærenskjold or Werenskjold family) often found suitors for their daughters outside Norway. He may as well have come from another European country. The name has a German sound to it, so it would probably be Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Holland, Austria or Switzerland.

I do have some Wathnes traveling on the Ebenezer from Stavanger to New York in 1851. I don't know if they are related to your people or not. On the passenger list he is only listed as "Zach. Christoffersen", but there is an account (letter to Christoffer Svendson Watne) by him from the crossing, which you can see on the Ebenezer page, and there he goes by the name "Zacharias Christophersen Wathne". His family later changed the name to Watner in the US it seams.

I agree that the Wattner name sounds like it could be of German descent. Doesn't the 1865 census show his nationality or country of origin? |

If Adolf Severin was german the census would probably have said so. I don't think Severin sounds german. You woul maybe find more about him in a family book of the Werenskiold family.

Hi I found a child born to Adolph on the LDS Scandinavian CD ADOLFSEN WATTNER, Olaf Thorvald Wilhelm Gender: Male Birth Date: 7 Dec 1866 Christening Date: 7 Apr 1867 Recorded in: Oslo, Akershus, Norway Collection: Domkirken; Trefoldighet; Den Norske Kirke Father: Adolf Severin WATTNER Mother: Othilde Fredrikke Elisabet WARNSKJOLD Source: FHL Film 255760 Dates: 1856 - 1870
With part of his name being Wilhelm I would guess German origin too. It could be that his ancestors came from Germany. I know one of my ancestors came from Germany in the mid 1600's and kept the Ziegler name. Also on the LDS there are several Watner's from the Heddal, Telemark area and several Wattner's from the Skien, Telemark. There is a Tønnes Wathner in Skien on the 1865 census possibly Adolf's father. http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&filnamn=arkivverket/ft1865/f60806&variabel=0&postnr=500&fulle=true&spraak=e
This is the marriage record from the CD WATNER, Adolf Severin Age: 28 Marriage Wife: Otilde Fredrikke Elisabeth WERNSKJOLD Age: 20 Marriage Date: 2 Nov 1864 Recorded in: Oslo, Akershus, Norway Collection: Domkirken; Trefoldighet; Den Norske Kirke Husband's Father: Tonnes WATNER Wife's Father: Otter WERNSKJOLD Source: FHL Film 255761 Dates: 1858 - 1874
This doesn't give you the ship he sailed on but you know it had to be after April 1867 so narrows it down some and hopefully some more information to search on Carla

Carpenter Tønnes Wathner lives in Skien in 1865 with his daughter Caroline. Christence, another daughter i presume, lives in Christiania as a fosterdaughter and works as a teacher. Tønnes and Caroline is here: here While Christence is here: here
