Jens Pedersen Hogseth immigrated to the USA in the 1870’s or 1880’s, coming to Wisconsin. He was from Elverum Norway, born approx 1856. He was the son of Peder Johnsen (b. 1821) and Marte Olsdatter (b. 1822) and a brother of Martin Hogseth (b.1862). Martin immigrated to Wisconsin, USA, and he was my grandfather. He died in 1944. I believe it was sometime in the late 1880’s or early 1990’s that Jens disappeared, never to be heard from again. Whether he took the name Hogseth or Pedersen, I do not know. Any information you can provide on his immigration date, actual birth date, or any other information would be most appreciated, as I would like to solve his eventual whereabouts and life. Thanks much! --Steve Hogseth

I continue to be amazed and very grateful to all the people who contribute to this site! Your information has been very helpful to me. When I get information from you, such as these last posts from Jane and Lynda, that further allows to me dig deeper at my local history center. Without your help, I doubt that I could have found a fraction that I have. A HUGE THANK YOU!! -- Steve Hogseth

I understand Jens Pedersen Hogseth and Juline Pedersdatter Hogseth and Gudor Loken left Oslo Norway on April 20, 1882, and arrived in Hull England, the date not specified ... although I assume still in April. I assume they then left for USA in late April or early May of 1882. I have tried finding them deporting from Hull (I assume that is Liverpool) but have had no luck at all. Any ideas how to find that info? Thanks! --Steve

Lynda, you are very helpful ... thank you. I just spent two hours browsing at the local history center. I browsed two ships, one had a passenger list of 141 pages, and it was very difficult to read. I just skipped over pages where the country of origin was NOT Norway, which means I skipped SWEDEN, since the three people are from Norway. Neither of the two ships was "France." Can you comment on how you know that "Jans Petterson" is actually Jens Pedersen? How "Juliene Petterson" is actually Juline Pedersen? And how "E.E. Loken" was Gudor Loken? How they ever got "E.E." as a translation from Gudor is something hard to fathom. I can understand the other two, because phonetically they are close. And then Sweden??? They were all from Norway. Are all three names listed next to each other? If so, that is very strong evidence that they are the three I am looking for. I am very curious as to how you deciphered all this? Very good detective work on your part!!! I am certain I would NEVER have found them on my own. I will be away for several days, so will not be able to get to the history center until May 10, but I will check this out when I return. Thank you once again! --Steve

Well if you look at the original manifest you can see that it is not Gudor but just initials. They are hard to read since they are smudged and the trascriber read them as E, E,and he read the last name as Loker but I think they are probably G C and the last neme is Løken. All three names are next to one another. They are on page 761 of a total of 1153 pages. What convinced me was the names are close and the ages are right. Also the prescence of the next two passengers Pen Olsen and Caroline Olsen both age 23 correspond well with the two passengers quite close to Jens and company in the Emigranter over Kristiania. Those two people were named Pehr Olsen and Karoline Olsen both age 23.The link was provided to you by Kåre and I repeat here.

During the past several weeks I have been talking with many "new" cousins here in the USA, --- in North Dakota, California, and Maine, filling in various puzzle pieces thru the postings I have made on this website. During this time, I keep exploring avenues, searching for "Jens." I have looked for both "Jens Hogseth" and "Jens Petersen" ... more precisely for "Jens P Petersen." Unfortunately there seems to be many hundreds of Jens Petersens, and to search them all seems all-but-insurmountable. While he may have used "Petersen", I'm still more inclined to believe he used "Hogseth." I have recently learned that Jens last had contact with his brother Martin, in 1890, in Chippewa Falls, WI. Last nite I found a death certificate (March 9, 1904) for "Erik O Hogseth" in Trempealeau Wisconsin. I found this connection rather interesting, in that Trempealeau was listed as the destination for Jens when he immigrated in 1882. I could find no other records on Erik, so his death age is unknown. Maybe he was a son of Jens and he was born in the USA? Or maybe he was unrelated? Maybe he was born in Norway, and came from a different Hogseth clan? Could somebody please help me determine the roots of Erik O Hogseth, and if he might be related to Jens Petersen Hogseth? Thank you! -- Steve

The only farm named Hogseth in 1865 was in Elverum.
In 1900 there were in addition to Elverum two Hogseth farms in Aurskog parish, Akershus county.

Of Høgseth farms there were more than 230 persons living in 1900 and 45 in 1865.
If an Høgseth em. to America he would most liklely to avoid questions about how the name was spelled change to Hogseth that was more across in Norway as lastname in 1900 (66 persons).
O. most likely stands for Ole and Erik if he was born after 1865 there were no Ole that could be his father on Høgseth farms in 1865 or Erik if he was born before 1865.

This is only an indication and no proof and Elverum is excluded.
