Need help finding background on Ole Lier who immigrated to Massachusetts in 1900. Family history has it that the family name was orginally Gulbranson and the name Lier came from the district. Ole's father's name was Hartvig and his mother was Marie. Please help me figure out the name change.

The name and name change are consistent with Norwegian naming practice and the practices of Norwegian immigrants to USA. Gulbrandsen is a patronymic name and Lier is a place name. Both were likely used in Norway. A typical Norwegian immigrant would choose one of the two as a surname in America. A Google search will yield more reading you can do about this.

Here is a possible baptism in Oslo for an Ole Lier b (probably in this case b=baptism rather than birth since there is only one date) 4 Apr 1880:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4LX-P7S

The film number references this Oslo parish:
Den Norske kirke. Gamle Aker menighet (Oslo)

Source for the parents' names:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4H4-NJ7

The 1885 Kristtiania census transcription says Ole Lier's parents were born Urskaug:

Here is the Ole Lier above's birth / baptism #45 b 12 Jan 1880:
Source information: Oslo county, Gamle Aker, Parish register (official) nr. 6 (1880-1887), Birth and baptism records 1880, page 9.

Well done. So Ole Lier's parents are Hartvig Gulbrandsen Lier and Randine Larsdatter Mangbakken, (applying the names as found in the discussion on the link previously posted.)
Garversvend is an occupation, means tanner. I think.

The birth/baptism record jkmarler posted:
Entry #45
Birth 12 January 1880
Baptism 4 April 1880
Name of child: Ole
Parents: Garversvend (?) Hartvig Gulbrandsen Lier and Randine Larsdatr.
Parents' birthplace: ? (hard to read - Bent_egal.?)
Parents' birth year: 57, 57 ( = 1857)
Baptismal sponsors: list of names (Mathea Gulbrandsdtr? and Mathea Larsen? and Hans Jacobsen? Anders Larsen? Johan Gulbrandsen? Christen Borgersen?

From the researchers on the other link, Hartvig was born 26 December 1857 and died 29 December 1904; Randine died 1908.

The 1885 Kristtiania census ( this is the city we call Oslo)
Hartvig Lier born 1857 in Urskaug
Randine Lier born 1856 in Urskaug
Ole Lier, son, born 1880
Johan Lier, son, born 1882
Georg Lier, son, born 1884
