My husband, William Max Moe and I have the Family Bible of Hans Thoresen Moe (fod May 24, 1826) and wife Ellen Gorina - fod Feb. 9, 1836). It says they immigrated to USA in about July 1866. Gift den 24 June, 1859 (perhaps this is when they married). They had three children when they left Norway, Hans Jakob Moe (fod Aug. 26, 1860), Anne Marie (fod May 10, 1862), KaroLine (fod June 1865, dode 1866). According to my find on ancestry.com Hans Jakob lists his home as Gjerdrum, Norway. Hans Thoresen Moe's father was Thore Moe and his mother Kare Moe. We are trying to verify if our family is from Gjerdrum and if there are family (granted very distant) members in Norway that we could contact. Thore and Kare are buried in the same cemetery in Kansas as Hans and Ellen. However, I don't know when they came to America. I believe other family came (perhaps a daughter of Thore and Kare) and would like to be able to find any information about the entire family

If the family left in July 1866 they should be counted in the 1865 census in Norway (which was actually taken 1 Jan 1866).

Here they are on Mo in Gjerdrum in 1865 census:
http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=2&filnamn=f60234&gardpostnr=130&personpostnr=747&merk=747#ovre

There is an older daughter Karen aged 15 in the household, possibly indicating that Hans was married before Ellen Gorina in 1859.

But Hans is listed as "ungkarl" so a bachelor when he married Ellen, #8:
Source information: Akershus county, Gjerdrum, Parish register (official) nr. 7 (1857-1866), Marriage records 1859, page 171.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=514&idx_id=514&uid=ny&idx_side=-160

His father is listed as Thorer Larson Mo.

Hans Thorerson's birth / baptism left side page:
Source information: Akershus county, Gjerdrum, Parish register (official) nr. 4 (1816-1836), Birth and baptism records 1826, page 140-141.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=7630&idx_id=7630&uid=ny&idx_side=-74

His parents are Thorer Larsen and Kari (Christoffersdtr lined out) and replaced with Hansdatter.

The daughter Karen from the 1865 census was born Dec 5 1851, see #64. She was born out of wedlock, the father Hans Thorersen, Moe was a soldier and the mother was Jĝrgine Olsdatter, Moe.

There were 3 Moe farms in 1900.
I believe Moe is spelled Mo today.
It´s a smaller road north of Gjerdrum population centre named Mogutua, a local dialect for Mo-gata, Mo-street, passing 4 farms which I believe are Mo farms.

The record is of Hans Moe et Gorine of Bo????. Next to names are a list of the passengers. List is 1 adult male, 1 adult female, three between 1-14 and one infant. No names given for the childen. Date of arrival is given as June 4, 1866. Peder Johnsen and family are listed directly above Hans and family. Peder and family consist of nine. It looks like the wife of Peder has the same name ending as Gorine. That is Kr??? og ? Bo???. and Gorine is Gorine og ? Bo???.

That is the exact same page that I am looking at on the Ancestry.com page. At the top of page one for that manifest the ship is listed as the Emerald. The page that comes up for Hans Moe is listed as page 10 of 14 pages.

The Emerald is ship #41 in the order at Quebec and Olaf is #42 in 1866. The Emerald's list (according to the Canadian site has 8 pages and the Olaf's list is 6 pages. Apparently Ancestry incorrectly united the two passenger lists and called them all as if they were on Emerald. Curious...

Interesting in the Children of the Ocean chapter on this website is this from the Olaf voyage in 1866:

"On the Olaf in 1866 a woman gave birth to a boy child and right afterwards the Captain and the Doctor asked that he be named Olaf in honor of the ship. "

Many many thanks to everyone who replied to my message. My husband and I are so thankful for all of your assistance. Verifying that they, indeed, are from Gjerdrum, Norway is just amazing for us. I will pass this information onto other members of our Moe Family Tree (as well as all of the resources you have all so kindly provided. With your information about an older daughter of Hans Thorersen Mo(e), Karen, I think we finally have an answer to another piece of the family tree puzzle. Again, our most sincere thanks for all of your time and kindness - Kaarto, jkmarler, lyndal40 and eibache.
