I am researching the SCHELLHORN family, who have lived in Norway since about 1860.

Can anyone help with the following query? I know that the family were living at:

Bøgade 13,
Sørumsgaden 1,
Grønland 23,

in Kristiania.

Can anyone tell me which parish records to look at for these addresses? I cannot seem to find a map / website listing parish churches in relation to house addresses.

My research is at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=scatchardfamily

Depends on which years you are interested in, but this might be a help
Bøgade 13 - most likely Kampen
Sørumsgaden 1 - most likely Kampen
Grønland 23 most likely Grønland

The particular person I'm looking for is Ferdinand August Schellhorn, whom I know was born in 1881. His parents had children baptised in Sarpsborg between 1864 and 1875, the records for which I have found.

But I know there were at least 4 more children...

I know the family was at the addresses given in 1900 (from the census), but in between is a bit of a blank.

Are there indexes for the parish registers? It will save me trawling through them separately.

I have look in Grønland, but no success as yet. I shall now look at Kampen, but any other option appreciated (I have looked in the DomKirke and Paulus and Petrus).

Also, was there civil registration in Norway, as in England during this period? That might help, if it happened...

This is what I have found so far:
Bachelor Tinsmith Heindrich Friedrich Julius Scellhorn (25) married maiden Julie Sofie Tollefsdatter (24) Nov 29 1863.
Heindrich was born Dec. 30 1838 and his father was Ferdinand Schellhorn in Schønberg Slesvig Holstein, Germany.
Julies parents were Tollef Madsen in Haraldstad, Thune and Inger Johnsdatter. Julie was born July 16 1839 and baptized Aug 21.
In 1865 Heinrich and Julie lived in Thorsbæk - Gaden Sarpsborg and had two children Marie and Hanibal.
Marie was not Heinrichs daughter, she was born out of wedlock Febr 2 1860 and her father was shoemaker Andreas Pedersen from Fredrikstad (was in Kongsvinger at the baptism) Marie was baptized Emilie Marie on May 6 in Thune church see #112.
Rudolf Hannibal was born Sept 3 1864 and baptized Oct 2 in Sarpsborg. He was confirmed in Fredrikstad April 20 1879.
Heinrich came to Sarpsborg in Aug 1863 to work for the local Tinsmith Hansen see #35.
In 1900 Heinrich and Julie lived at Grønland 23, 2 floor.
Gustav Emil was born June 27 1869 and baptized July 25 in Sarpsborg. Living in 1900 at Bøgade 13, Kristiania. His daughter Hjørdis was born June 23 1899 and baptized Hjørdis Elfrida, see #212
Juul Heinrich was born Febr 15 1873 and baptized March 16 in Sarpsborg. Living in 1900 at Sørumsgaden 1, Kristiania
Sigurd Alfred was born Sept 23 1878 and baptized Dec 26 in Fredrikstad see #72. Parents were then living at Nedre Torvestredet 92. Sigurd living in 1900 at Bøgade 13, Kristiania.
Fredrikke Amalie was born Febr 8 1875 in Sarpsborg. She was baptized at home by Reverend Bredal on March 23. See #29
Ingvald Mattias was born June 2 1871 and baptized July 9 in Sarpsborg see #65.
Thorvald Martin was born Oct 6 1866 and baptized Dec 2 in Sarpsborg
Maybe there was some new info in this.

This is amazing!!

Thank you so much, eibache, for your help!

There are indeed some new things (for me) here, and I should appreciate it if you could tell me the exact sources where you got the information?

In particular, I'd like to know the sources for:

1) the information on Marie

2) the information about the "local tinsmith, Hansen"

3) the church in Fredrikstad for Sigurd's baptism - I looked but couldn't really find any baptism records for the SCHELLHORN family, and there appear to be a few options for churches in Fredrikstad

4) Invald Hattaas - new to me!!! Is this a boy or a girl and is it in the same churches as the others in Sarpsborg.

FINALLY : REALLY IMPORTANT TO ME!!! I desperately want to find the birth / baptism for my great grandfather, Ferdinand August, b. c 1881 and I'd love to know if you can find out anything for him...

Thank you once again, and hope to hear back!

Re Fredrikstad:

the records on http://www.arkivverket.no/ for Fredrikstad stop in 1878...

Does this mean that they don't exist, or that they haven't been microfilmed and / or uploaded?

(I am hoping that, since you have details for Sigurd, which is after the records "stop", the records do continue; perhaps Fredrikstad is the place to look for Ferdinand August...)

After 1878 you will notice that those records would listed under Østre Fredrikstad, Vestre Fredrikstad or Glemmen which had previously made up the combined Fredrikstad parish. I think this separation into separate parishes was not actually completed until 1884.
Source: LDS Family History Library catalog - information under Fredrikstad - topic Church records.

The info on Marie comes from the baptismal record, use #112 in my posting of 01/08/2008 : 00:47:42, edited 01/08/2008 08:45:08
In the left column of the record when Heinrich came to Sarpsborg, see #35 in my posting of 01/08/2008 : 00:47:42, edited 01/08/2008 08:45:08 - that column is info about where the person was living - it says "hos blikkenslager Hansen" (at Tinsmith Hansen).
Could you please come up with some more info on Ferdinand - say how do you know he was born 1881, where or who did he marry, was he the one who came to UK and if so about what time, etc. etc.

When Gustav Emil and Martha (Malla) married Aug 9 1891, see #46
Gustav was a sailor and was living at Lakkegaten 21, he was confirmed in Ø. Aker 1884. See
#39
the family was then living at Brogaten 5.

Thank you for this!

Ferdinand August must have come to the UK in ca 1900, as he was married in South Westoe, County Durham, on 25 Dec 1902.

In the marriage register he gives his age as 22, which (if correct) means that he was born anywhere between 26 Dec 1879 and 25 Dec 1880.

At his death, on 11 Feb 1955, his age was given as 74, which (if correct) means his birthday should be between 12 Feb 1880 and 11 Feb 1881.

Merging the two sources, his birthday SHOULD be in between 12 Feb 1880 and 25 Dec 1880.

If you have not looked up the marriage record for Heinrich and Julie it is #22
Julies baptismal record is #131

No luck in the search for Ferdinand, since he is not listed in the 1900 census for Kristiania maybe he then had already left for UK, his brother Gustav was in Durham at that time, but had his family in Kristiania. Any record of Ferdinand moving into UK?

On the "Norwegian" side I have the following:
Julies parents were Tollef Madsen(born at Ejet bapt. March 18 1798) in Haraldstad, Thune and Inger Maria Joensdatter (baptized July 15 1798 in Raade)
Hans March 6 1820 Raade (out of wedlock)
Ole born July 1 1833 Store Thune
Johan Fredrich born Febr 20 1836 Store Thune
Julie born July 16 1839 and baptized Aug 21 Thune.

Tollefs parents Mads Olsen Lundestad (born at Yven, bapt June 15 1766) and Ragnild Tolfsdatter Vister (born at Wister, bapt March 25 1768) were married Dec 10 1794. In 1801 they were at Ejet Thune. Tollef had an older sister Oliana (born on the Yven farm and bapt. Nov 1 1795)

Mads Olsens parents were Ole Christophersen and Siri Madsdatter.

Ragnild Tolfsdatters parents were Thorer Olsen and Kirsten Nielsdatter (must be some misprint Tolfsdatter – Thorersdatter)

Inger Marias parents Joen Monsen (1748) and Maria Jonsdatter (1765) at Slangsvold, Raade in 1801
her siblings were
Anne (1789)
Anders (1793)
Hendricha (bapt. March 22 1795)
