Just some thoughts regarding the "mystery" cousin.
It might be a real family relative, but because too many immigrants came to the country, US government started to put restrictions on immigration in the beginning of the 19th century.
Like in the modern day Norway, there was some rules that there had to be a family reunion ("familiegjenforening"), in order to get access to the country.
Thus; many people "made up" cousins living in the US, in order to get in.

I hope you realize how valuable your efforts are to me. I have been doing some "easy" search for my own ancestors in various "bygdebøker" (local history books), but never been accurate with the primary sources. During this work sources has become most important. Now you help me a lot with this. Sources are exciting, but then I need both luck and help to find the right sources.

I see your point regarding the "cousin", here again from my draft:

"R. Amundsen must have a father named Amund. It is unusual that two brothers have the same first name, and what I know is that there is only one Amund Hansen Sjøenden among the siblings of eight. I do not think that Karoline's mother, Kaisa from Sweden had a brother named Amund. This was not a common name in Sweden.

A possible solution to the puzzle is that R. Amundsen is the same as Rangdi Amundsdaughter, and she was the daughter of Amund Larsen Stomperud who was a smallholder at Dammen in 1865, not far from Sjøenden. Rangdi emigrated to America in 1882. Source: Hedmark county, Sør-Odal, Ministerialbok No. 5 (1876-1885) Expatriate, 1882, page 423. She is # 44 on that page (link). When Karoline went to America in 1904, she had become Rangdi's "step" cousin. Amund Hansen Sjøenden married a third time with Marte Larsdaughter Stomperud, sister of Rangdi's father Amund Larsen Stomperud. Marte was Karoline's stepmother, and thus was Rangdi and Karoline "step" cousins. My grandfather and Rangdi are "real" cousins.

In the census of 1865, Amund Larsen Stomperud has Rangdi, a daughter of 9 years. Here is the link to the census. And here is the link to the birth and baptism in the parish register. The source is Hedmark county, Sør-Odal, Ministerialbok No. 1 (1849-1859), born and baptized in 1857, page 110. This track I can also follow, but that's another story."
---
"In the census of 1905 I can not find Karoline anywhere in the United States. I thought maybe she would be staying with her cousin now called Randi Amundson, and she is married to Amund Amundson, also from Norway. In the transcript Randi is listed alone (link), but in the primary source, I see that she and Amund have seven children: Emma, Anton, Ludwig, Ernie, Ole, Anna and Roy. Along with them also live William Amundson, 28 years with his wife Tilda, 27 years and born in Sweden. This could be Amund Amundson's younger brother with his wife."

You don't get the links because this is just a copy of the text, and the copy probably doesn't seem coherent to you because you don't have the whole story. But this is how I could verify Karoline's story.

The Carl Berg you mentioned might be the same as the Carl Berg who lived in McHenry county. This is from the McHenry county history pg 629, regarding his wife Otillie:

"....Otilie Berg, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernt Berntson, was born February 27, 1885, in Kongsvinger, Norway. In 1906 she came to her uncle Charlie Berg in McHenry County. She married Carl M. Berg on July 11, 1908 at Bergen, North Dakota. They later returned to Norway to live until 1914 when Carl returned to the United States. Mrs. Berg and the two oldest children,...joined Carl in the U.S. in the spring of 1916..."

The author of the story was the Berg's daughter Dagmar Everson who was born also at Kongsvinger 4 June 1913. Dagmar and her husband Earl had 3 children, 3 daughters named Doris Elaine, Gladys Olean, Eunice Marie. In 1985 there were 2 grandchildren children of Gladys Twedt, Julie and Karen.

Thank you very much! This confirm to me that the message my grandfather got in 1954 was from a person that could have been related to Olaf Stømner, and also in compliance with the real situation for some in the Gilbertson family. This message has been a key to find traces. Witout the name of Garfield I think the validity of my assumptions would have been less.

Hmmm... another record that says his d.o.b. is 06 Apr. 1883.

#8 Karl Martinsen Overudsberget emigrated to America in April 1907.
Both his christening record and his confirmation record says Karl Martinsen Overudsberget is born 24 Jan 1884.

Regarding "Cousin R. Amundsen" in Herman, Minnesota. That must be Amunds's wife Randi Amundsen.
Census-1900 for Herman, Grant, Minnesota. Randi is listed as born October 1857.
In the death record for their daughter Emma, Randi is listed with a lastname of Larson.

The Rangdi Amundsdatter you mention above is born 01 Oct 1857.

Wow - this is a lot of progress!

Find a grave memorial for Amund Amundson 1856-1932 and Regina Larson Amundson 1857-1918, buried Lakeside Cemetery, Herman, Grant, Minnesota. The children posted on Find-a-Grave are as found in the 1905 census in Herman, Grant, Minnesota and posted earlier by Arne:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=AM&GSpartial=1&GSbyrel=all&GSst=25&GScntry=4&GSsr=1641&GRid=32724177&

Rangdi's father was Amund Larsen Stomperud, so the informant on her death certificate could easily note her surname as Larson.

Here is a link to Stevens County historical society, with record of burials of Gilbertson family members in Kongsvinger cemetery in Donnelly, Minnesota. Likely the family were members of Kongsvinger Lutheran Church.
http://cemeteries.stevenshistorymuseum.com/pub/recordlist.php

Most of the death records are also found at the Minnesota Historical Society website (mnhs.org) and several of the marriages are noted online at Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS).

Hej Arne, it's just an ordinary link - no authorization needed.

One option is to copy and paste it into your address bar.

Or go to www.stevenshistorymuseum.com
Choose "Research"
"Cemetery Records"
"Find"

It's an awesome database, as it correlates burials with death records and includes spouse, spouse maiden name, parents names, and cause of death (where available).
