There can be many reasons, but I often wonder why a person call for information about their Norwegian ancestors or otherwice unresponsive. I am only a volunteer spending a lot of time helping others, but it feels silly to sit on information if you do not know if the owner of a topic are intereseted. So every week when I look threw my folders I delete what seems to be no longer of interest but only occupy unnecessary space.

Sorry Kåre you feel underutilized and your work underappreciated. Why do people who have posed an initial question not come back with a response or follow up question-- why don't they realize that they are missing their opportunity or have they forgotten? |

Kåre - I very much appreciate your (and others) help. When I posted “Search for my grandfather” (posted 26/07/13) I received quick and very helpful info. I posted my last reply on 17/08/13. In my last reply I did ask a couple of questions and made replies to others. Only you replied (a quick history of wars between Denmark/Norway and Sweden). Maybe my last reply was too long and viewed as not being focused enough. I had returned from vacation, and I wanted to try to catch up. There were several treads going on with others ,,, all related to the history of my paternal grandfather ( Jens Olsen Tang).
As a new member, I am not sure how long a given topic should continue. Mine is now 3 pages. One question leads to others … all generally related to filling in gaps in my family history. I have several questions that have emerged, but I don’t know if I should continue with my original topic or begin new ones. Because no one but you replied to my last post I have the feeling that people have lost interest. My original goal was to find out info about the arrival to the US of Jens Olsen Tang … when , where, and how (arrival date, port of arrival, ship and route). You provided the 1st two replies I received that gave emigration info. In spite of many efforts (me and others) I still cannot identify immigration info, but will continue to search. None-the-less, all the other responses have been invaluable to me, and I can’t thank you and all volunteers enough.
Regards
Doug

Thank you for bringing this up Kåre. You wonderful researchers are so polite and kind that this is a difficult topic to discuss. No one wants to be critical of others. We avoid pointing out mistakes and highlighting weaknesses. Instead we try to build on one another's strengths in a spirit of collaboration, whether we are asking for help or trying to give it.
Family history research is a gift of time and skills. In the case of this forum, those gifts are given in abundance by highly skilled volunteer researchers (from whom I am constantly learning!). By posting a new query (a message asking a question or requesting help), an Original Poster begins a dialogue. Replies are, in a sense, gifts of attention. It naturally follows that an Original Poster needs to acknowledge replies.
As you can see, you struck a chord with me.
[Came back to edit, for length, and because I've been wondering about this again]

Thank`s everyone. You explained much better in English what I meant to say. In fact, over the years, some who did not respond in this forum, 3 in Sandsvær and two in Telemark, have familylines who can lead their ancestry back to the 1200s or 1300s, which is very seldom.

I have found that the information I have gained from this website is more than i ever thought I would find. The people who volunteer their time to help us in finding our heritage are just wonderful. I know that if I just can't find something after doing my own research, someone has always jumped in to help me. I so much appreciate the time and effort you all have put into finding people and dates. Thanks to all of you. |

I hope I am not one of those you feel are "unrsponsive"....to the contrary...I feel I have taken TOO much of your time with my own simple-minded questions and am hesitant to "continue the conversation" as you have so many others to help. Thanks again for all you do! |

Do no be afraid
The reason I asked was when one sits on information, sometimes a lot, without any feedback at least at some point I wonder; Should I delete or keep the content. You never takes to much of our time Kåre |

Oh good! Then I have another simpe minded question for you! I have been trespassing onto a website, Geni, where I see numerous "trees" (going nearly back to Adam and Eve) developed by various Norwegians. I also have a copy of "Some Old Norse Families" by Henrik O. Lunde that details about 20 old families of that same ilk. I thought I had learned years ago that virtually NO ONE can make certain connections back to the 1200s. Are either of these credible sources to your knowledge?

Adam and Eve Keep it as a curiosity.
Some familylines which incl. noble families goes back to the 1200, a few even longer. Ref. to old documents, diplomas and other written sources is a condition and show seriousness.
A lot of familytrees online goes back to the Viking kings. May not be trusted.
Statisticks (I have read) ca 5 % of the population in Norway are descendants from these old kings.
A curiosity. The longest written familytree in Norway is about "Ynglingedynasti" Harald Halvdansson " Hårfagre" Harald Hairfair who gathered Norway to one kingdom ca 870 AC.
Historian Are Frodi "Are Frodi the wice" ca 1067-1148 from Iceland made Harald Hairfairs 40 generation familytree which goes back to "Yngve Frøy" ca 100 BC . Frøy means master and it is ref. to a Turk king who had to flee with the tribe and many generation later came to Scandinavia where they settled down. It can of cource not be trusted.
There are some fantastic names in it as the Norse Gods Odin and Njård.
On internet there are a lot of garbage in genealogy. A problem is to separate "wheat from the chaff" A Norwegian saying.

Like many of the other responses I feel that I need to do some of the homework myself and leave you the experienced searchers to help new individuals and their requests. I too am extremely grateful for the assistance I have been given on this forum and would like to give kudos to all who have assisted me. That being said I am always searching and my questions are endless so you will see more posts by myself in the future! Thanks again :) |

I too am extremely grateful for all the kind, generous, above-and-beyond type of help I have received from Kare and all the others who have helped me. The family names you have uncovered for me in the past week or so have my mind spinning, right along with my hands. Please know that I am thinking of all of you on a daily basis, even when I don't have time to come here for very long or for a few days.
You have started me down many new, exciting paths of discovery already. For example, now I need to learn just what kinds of goats and sheep are raised in the Vinge vicinity, because I want to spin some of their fiber.....and those sheep running along the road near Kinn Island...must ID those as well!
Once upon a time I knew how to say thank you in Norwegian; better put that on my list of vocabulary to learn. Headed now to Barnes & Noble to see if they carry Norwegian/English dictionaries, too. |
