According to the 1801 census for Aurdal, Mogens Thorsen was born about 1746. I have been searching in the parish records and have not been able to find his birth. Some of the records are very hard to read. I would like to find his birth and possibly figure out who his parents were. If anyone has time to take a look at this I would greatly appreciate it. I am assuming that he was born in the Aurdal area sometime around 1746 as he was living there in 1801. Thanks for any help.

Mogen / Mogens is a fairly uncommon name. In the 1801 census 208 were found with that first name. In the 1865 census the total is 21, mostly occuring in the east and south of Norway, very few in the west and north. No specific information about your Mogens but maybe a general trend on the origin of the name....

Being as the census says born about 1746, maybe I need to start looking several years before 1764 and several years after. I looked 1 year before and 2 years after. Maybe I just didn't recognize the name either. Some records I can read fairly well and some of the older ones I really have trouble reading.

I don't find any Mogens Thorsen in the 1801 census. Are you sure the spelling is correct?
Since you also mention both 1746 and 1764 - which one is the correct one.

Perhaps it wasn't the census. I can tell you that at the top of the page I printed out it says 'Folketelling 1801 for 0542P Aurdal prestegjeld'. I just looked in the census and didn't see it either. What I printed gave the person ID as " ID: pf01058264005609. I had been doing so much looking in the afternoon I don't remember how I happened to find that record. but I had printed it out so at least I could give some information about it.

Sorry if this has caused some confusion. Hope what I just wrote will give you a clue as to what I was talking about.

And I made an error by saying 1764. I meant 1746. I need to go a little slower and be more careful. Thanks for helping me.

Ingrid Nilsdatter was Mogens 2. wife, so we can assume that some of the children were from his 1. marriage.
