My maternal great great grandmother Olava Olsen who was born in Christiana in 1862 emigrated to New Zealand and married Wilhel\m (William) Frans (Francis) Anderson (born Gottenburg, Sweden) in 1884. Olava's parents (according to the information on her NZ marriage certificate) were Berta (nee Christiansen) and Christian Olsen.
I am try to trace how and when Olava came to NZ -ship and date and also wether she was accompanied by her parents. Did she come here with siblings? - a Lena Olsen was a witness to the marriage.
Olava died in Wellington in 1929 and her husband remarried in 1931.

I believe these are your relatives from the 1865 census. Olava is a foster daughter, listed as age 6, so she was probably born about 1860, at Løiten Hedemarken.

This looks like Olava's birth record, born 7 Jan 1860. Parents Anders Olsen Nordløkken and Helene Pedersdatter.

If Anders Olsen and Helen Pedersdtr are Olava's parents, they are still alive with 3 daughters in the 1865 census. The youngest daughter Eline could be your Lena Olsen as a witness for Olava's wedding.
Olava's Family

Inge's birth record, born 7 May 1858. #64

Petronelle's birth record, born 8 June 1862. #83

Eline's birth record, born 8 July 1865. #106

It would help if you knew what year Olava emigrated.

I believe the child Olava is at her Aunt Birthe's.

Anders and Hellene had at least one more child in Løiten
1870 Sept 24 Petrine to Anders Olsen Nordlokken '12 & Hellen Pedersd '28 m '53

They actually married 1858 Feb 25
enkm. Anders Olsen Nikleby 34 father - Ole Andersen
Hellene Pedersdatter Prestegaardeie 30 father - Peder Torkelsen

In checking for births, there are two Berthe Pedersdatter's born in 1825 in Løiten. I believe she is the one born 1825 Oct 6 Birthe to Peder Torkildsen & Petronelle Prevens Naestad.

I checked the lineage of Hellene Pedersdatter, who was Olava's mother. Hellene is also a child born to Peder and Petronelle.

Thanks for the information provided.

I can't seem to get my head around the names and birth dates as provided though.
On Olava'a marriage certificate it clearly states that her mother's name is Berta (previously Christiansen) and her father as Christian Olsen.
On her marriage certificate (0ct 1884) she says her age is 23 - indicating she was born in 1861.
On th Aliens register for 1917 she is aged 53 which puts her birth year as 1884 (it also states she has been 37 years in New Zealand - indicating that she arrived in 1880).
On her death certificate and on her grave (1929) she is aged 67 which incates a birth year of 1862.
So this all points to an indicitave birth year between 1861 and 1864. - not 1860 or 1859
It also indicates that she emigrated to NZ about 1880 .

How have you arrived at the conclusion that (1. )she was a foster child and (2.), that the parents are different to the ones she has indicated on her marriage certificate?

I have not presented any conclusions to my findings. Based on the initial information you provided, I found some old records that seemed to match your inquiry. I did the best I could to give you some information to help in your research. It has now become obvious that there is more information available than the initial inquiry.

Here is a simple Norwegian to English dictionary, and if you look up the word "pleiedatter" you will find the translation to mean foster daughter.Dictionary

The world of geneology becomes a game of mixed up dates and names, and only by searching continoulsy for the best evidence can you find the right answers.

Good luck!

The facts:
In the census 1865 in Christiania Olava Andersdatter 6 years old was a fosterchild born at Løiten, Hedmark. She was then living with Christian Olsen who was married to Berte Pedersdatter 40 years old from Løiten, Hedmark.
Birthe (= Berte) Pedersdatter born Oct 6 1825 was the daughter of Peder Torkildsen Næstad and Petronelle Prevensdatter, see #52

Olavas birth record is #45
here it conforms with the 1865 census that she was an Andersdatter, her father was Anders Olsen, her mother was Helene Pedersdatter born Jan 13 1828 and she was the sister of Berte Pedersdatter in Christiania - Helenes birth record is #12
her parents were Peder Næstad and Petronell Prebensdatter.
Why Olava was living with her aunt and uncle is diffcult to say.

If your question relates to page 305 it is a record of a dead born child Nov 6 25 to Knud Olsen and Pernille Johnsdatter
The child was "full born" but its birth had to be aided with instruments.
Pernille Gaustadeiet in Rommedahl was the midwife.

You are still assuming that the persons being looked for were born in Løiten.

Unless it is the family you originally found in the 1865 census - Olava and her Mother could have been born anywhere in Norway, even if she emigrated from Oslo.

More research needs to be done in New Zealand - check all census records - immigrant records - who did she come with - then trace them back to Norway. Because of name changes it is harder to work from Norway to New Zealand.

As for the various names on Berte and Olava's documents -
Using for example the family just researched. For a surname, this Olava could have used her birth father's name AndersdatterAndersen (her patronymic), his patronymic/surname Olsen, the farm name she was born on, her foster father's name as a patronymic (Chistiansdatter/Christiansen) or his patronymic/surname of Olsen. These could change from time to time until they chose a permanent surname.
And even if it is recorded in the records, they can be wrong.

Thanks heaps for all the information - I did not realize that the system of names in Norways was so complicated.

In New Zealand there are currently no census records available for inspection so we can't access these. The nanny state government says that providing this is an invasion of personal privacy - a pretty lame excuse, I'd say. People are lobbying for a change without much success at this stage.
I know from her registration as an Alien in 1917 that she had been in NZ since 1880 - she would have been aged between 16 and 20, depanding which of her information you took.
At this stage I have been unable to locate which ship she arrived on, who with and the actual date - this was why I placed the query on this webchat page.
Also thanks for putting me onto the Norwegian-American Englisg dictionary. This has been most helpful.
I note that the records searched were initially from the 1865 census - as she could still have been in Norway in 1875 - how do I access the 1875 census records to see these?
Do the census records record the actual address of the people ? - as they do in the UK census records.
Once again - many thanks for all the help

She was in Fredensborgveien 5, Christiania in 1875, but her last name was Olsen, see here
her stepfather was then a widower.
