I have tried searching Digitalarkivet, but find nothing. My gg-grandmother's obituary says she was born Betsy Ann Johnson on 28 Feb 1850 in Bergin, Norway. She was baptized and confirmed in Norway. She came to America at the age of 18, making her home in Northwood, Worth, Iowa. (All of that is from the obituary.)
She is listed on the 1870 census in Northwood as a housekeeper living with the Boyd family. She married Alexander Anderson on 30 May 1874 in Boone County, Iowa. She is listed on the marriage record as Betsy R. Johnson. We have also seen her name listed as Betsy Belle.
It seems I should be able to find something in the Norwegian archives, but I find nothing. I realize her surname was probably not Johnson there. Perhaps Johnsdtr? Even checking my dates has come up empty.
If anyone has suggestions for what to check next, I would be most appreciative! |

Betsy R. Johnson could mean her father was R. Johnsen/Johannesen/Johansen.

Bjella is a farmname in Aal, Hallingdal that also means "bell".
Betsy seems very uncommon in Norway and sometimes in America is a diminuative for Elizabeth. So it might depend on when she picked up the name in Norway or US.

I guess Bergin was Bergen town, western Norway.

It should be noted that Betsy is listed in at least two censuses while residing in Iowa as born in Norway in 1852. Therefore some flexibility in expected birth year should be considered.

Thanks for info re age in census. If she left when 18 and was born 1852 parts of the obit and family lore would still work. |

What does her birthmonth and year look like in the 1900 census? Does she live to 1925 when the Iowa state census asks for parents' names? |

I think I'd look long and hard for Betsy in the 1925 Iowa State Census. That census asked everyone for their father's name and their mother's name (maiden name) and it MIGHT have some notation of when she immigrated to the US.
I agree that she was in Pocahontas Co. IA for the 1910 census and she is shown as dying in that same county in 1934.
I grew up not far from that county and am still puzzled that I've never heard of Swan Lake (except of course as a ballet). Her burial location in Laurens - of course, I know where that is. |
