Of the DNA testing since the person in common appears to be from Vestlandet, it sort of bolsters the forum initial emphasis of Bergen (and family tradition) and the environs of Bergen, it also makes Telemark seem a less auspicious place.

So Christine is a foster daughter and born Karmøen. Wonder if that's the same as Karmøy, in Rogaland?

Seems likely.

The newspaper article you posted (celebrating Christine's 92nd birthday) says she was born in "Koperweek" Norway in 1855 and came to USA at age 12. The article published Thursday. 07 August says her birthday was Tuesday - so a likely birth date 05 August 1855.

As a recap for anyone coming in fresh, since the trail meanders, the look at Halvor's wife Christine is a scrutiny of Halvor, who may or may not be related to Betsey. If he is traced in Norway, she may or may not be with him.

"Koperweek" may mean Kopervik on the island of Karmøy in Rogaland.

I wonder where she considers where she spent her childhood in Norway.

B 1855 Kopervik Rogaland
Resides 1865 Nes Akershus
Resides 1867 United States
Resides 1870 Iowa Worth County

Since Halvor likely lived in the same Iowa county from 1870 that gives a decade to become acquainted or reacquainted over here.

Her mother was from Farsund which is Sorlandet and her father from Koppervik (at least at the time she was baptized.)

Halvor may have lived in Rogaland or Akershus in Norway or in some other place not yet in evidence.

Someone to explore Halvor Johannesen b 1848 Nes in Akershus:

#90 Halvor Theodore Johanson b 14 Sept 1848:

Possibly his departure for America:

Haven't been able to find the 16 year sister Thea in the baptisms...

The father Johan Halvorsen was born ca 1819, with a wife Berte born ca 1823 and son Ludvig born ca 1853, fits this family tree for Johan Sagen (Halvorsen)
link

The birth of Halvor Theodore Johansen 14 Sept 1848 in Nes matches the rootsweb post for Halvor Theodore Sagen Johnson born 14 Sept 1848 and father John Halvorson matches the father on his posted marriage record.

On this link, Christine's married name is given as Mrs Halvor Theodore Sagen Johnson:
link

The 1865 census lists 8-year-old Marie. Family Search includes a birth for her as Berte Marie, and confirming the census birth year. Not a match for Betsey Ann.
link

So this is clearly the Halvor Johnson being tracked - and this cannot be the birth family for Betsey.

I'm not sure that much more research should be done on Halvor Johnson. I think this is the family outlined in the various posts & records. But there appears to be no one in the family named like Betsy nor born 28 Feb 1850, so this mission is done.

Well if we place our trust in the birth date of 28 Feb 1850 the Ancestry.com data base does not give us many candidates. Only four as a matter of fact. Now the data base is probably not complete for every birth within the country but there really is no first name resembling Betsy.

Well, if we eliminate the most identifiable characteristic on Betsy, her birth date, then how will we know that we have the right one in Norway?

Remember the birthdate is calculated on her death certificate. The date was typed in and the year was hand written. The year, month, and days also calculate to 1 March 1850 depending on the program or method used.

If the Bertha Anderson in Wadena is her (and I highly suspect it is) that census gives her birth as March 1850.

The only major US record on her that we haven't seen is the marriage record. Hopefully, there will be an additional clue leading to clarity.

In the 1900 Census there is a couple living in Sebaka, Waseca County. Using various sources I think the wife is named Johanna Johnson. Here is some information on her and her family. Perhaps she is a relative of Betsy.

Johanna J. Tjota (kjota)
1856–1943
BIRTH MAY 6, 1856 • Stavenger, Norway
DEATH JAN. 11, 1943 • Minneapolis, MN

Married to
John J Lande
1852–1922
BIRTH DEC. 22, 1852 • Norway
DEATH 23 MAR 1922 • St. Paul, MN

Johanna Linde
in the 1900 United States Federal Census
Name: Johanna Linde
[Johanna J Tjota Linde]
[Johanna Lande]
Age: 44
Birth Date: May 1856
Birthplace: Norway
Home in 1900: Sebeka, Wadena, Minnesota
Race: White
Gender: Female
Immigration Year: 1887
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: John J Linde
Marriage Year: 1888
Years Married: 12
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Household Members:
Name Age
John J Linde 47
Johanna Linde 44
John Linde 11
Janse Linde 10
Lisa Linde 8
Clara Linde 7
Hanna Linde 5
Edwin Linde 4
Arnie Linde 2

Oddly enough there appears to be a John J Lande married to second wife Johanna Johnson living in Winneabago, Iowa during this same time frame.
