I would say this is Lars, brother of Britha, because he was in Hartland on the 1880 census. It also just occurred to me that Lewis is the name someone (don't know who) listed as a brother of Betsy on a family tree at FamilySearch.org. I really think the Betsy Johnson mystery has been solved, but I'm hoping something concrete will come from the archives in Bergen and/or the books at the University of North Dakota to remove any doubt. Both of those have acknowledged my request, so it's just a matter of waiting for them to get back to me. |

I received a reply from the University of North Dakota with results of their initial quick search from the bygdebøker. (Just what does bygdebøker mean?) Here is what it says:
Inr 51 Finnen i Arnafjord sokn.
And this is what I get when I put that in Google Translate: John Gullakson Vikøyri v 243 (1828-1907) & 1849 Ingrid Jonasdtr Vikøyri v546 (1813-1864) fekk: Brita 1849 Guri 1852 (v612), Lars 1857 (USA 1897). This gave Johannes zone His 1876 with husmannsdtr Brita Oladtr Kvamme (1830 -) from Kvamsøy parish. He married again in 1876 Randi Nilsdtr Helland (1835-1914) from Modalen. Dei fekk Ingrid 1876 and Nille Marie 1878-1878. About Randi: see footnote below Prest Teigen Svolsvik. John fekk poor relief 1865-66, then appeared from 1902. He and Randi divorce in house No. 20. Ingrid Johannesdatter Vikøyri (1766-) fekk Nille Marie in 1900 with Lars Johnson Rogne (1879-) from Voss, see more under BNR 68/3 . Inr 51 fin in Arnafjord parish.
The researcher acknowledged there are mistakes in some of the dates (Lars emigrated in 1879--not 1897, for example), and there is no mention of Brita going to America. He will do additional research for me, but is there something missing in the Google translation that would be of interest? Who is Brita Oladtr Kvamme? I am aware of Randi Nilsdtr, but was Brita Oladtr another wife?
Many thanks! |

quote: (Just what does bygdebøker mean?
The translation I use is "Farm History Book"
literally it probably translates as "village book"
Google sometimes needs some help
Deretter fekk Johannes sonen Hans IS literally
Then got Johannes son Hans but means Then Johannes had a son named Hans.
fekk or today fikk comes from the verb å få to get or to receive so in this case he got.
There is no mention of Johannes marrying Brita Olsdtr. but it does say that he had a son named Hans with her.
quote: He and Randi divorce in house No. 20
No they did not divorce budde means lived so they lived in house No. 20.
today the word is bodde past tense and from the verb å bu to live
bodde lived
Here is a link to a useful dictionary for genealogy.

Nothing earth shaking in there and your translation is close. Most interesting is the mention of Lars going to America. |

Johannes Gullakson Vikøyri (=Vikoren) and Ingrid Jonasdatter Vikøyri had Brita born 1849, Guri born 1852 and Lars born 1857 (who went to US). The little notations after Johannes', Ingrid's, Guri's names are referencing information about them elsewhere in the books. Neither Brita nor Lars have any numbers.
Thereafter Johannes had a son Hans with Brita Olsdatter Kvamme born 1830 in Kvamsøy. (it doesn't say they married so probably Hans was illegitimate also)
He was newly married in 1876 to Randi Nilsdatter Øvre Helland and they had Ingrid born in 1876 and Nille Marie in 1878-1878. On Randi see the footnote under Prestteigen Svolsvik. Johannes received poor help (social service help) 1865-1866 and then thereafter beginning in 1902. He and Randi lived in house #20. Ingrid Johannesdatter Vikøyri (bad typo here should be 1876 ) had a daughter named Nille Marie with Lars Johnson Rogne from Voss, see more under farm number bnr 68/3 inr 51 found in Arnafjord parish.
Most farm numbers, at least in my experience are gnr __, bnr__, so not sure about the numbers.
At least the author didn't say that Brita died or that there was some other fate like she lived elsewhere in Norway. Circumstantially good that she took off to America. So I'd look for Guri's story and for Ingrid (mother) and Ingrid (halfsister's) stories. Also you might find other earlier generations, too if for some reason Brita loses her appeal in being Betsy-- to help with the DNA results.
Kvamsøy, Arnafjord and Vik are parishes managed together in Vik prestegjeld.
I see Anton also translated for you but I will leave mine up, too. |

Thank you, jkmarler and lyndal40, for your translations. That is very helpful. We found another "wife" and child from this. I will ask the researcher to see what else he can find. It's nice to make it to the top of his list.
The Norwegian-American dictionary will be very useful going forward! |

Great find of the younger Alexander's marriage license witnessed by Betsy!
I have received a wealth of information from the bygdebøker from the University of North Dakota. As it was explained to me, they are allowed to spend up to one hour on a research request. I must have had a good researcher because I got a lot in return for that!
Unfortunately, there isn't much for Britha Johannesdtr in the records. However, I feel confident drawing the conclusion that Britha Johannesdtr is my Betsy Johnson based on the following:
--The strongest and most compelling evidence is DNA. My mother shares 112cM with "Dan" whose paternal ancestry is Norwegian. DNA confirms there is a common ancestor, and sharing this amount of DNA suggests a common ancestor 3 to 4 generations back. --Among Dan's great-great grandfathers, there is only one who seems a likely candidate to father Betsy: Johannes Gullachsen. --Johannes fathered Britha Johannesdtr in 1849--very close to the date of 1850 we have for Betsy. --Britha Johannesdtr is a name that could logically become Betsy Johnson in America. --Britha Johannesdtr emigrated from Norway in 1870, arriving in Quebec in time to get to Iowa for the 1870 census. --Two candidates for Betsy Johnson show up on the 1870 census in Northwood, Iowa. --Britha's uncle Aslak (brother of Johannes) is living in Northwood at that time. --Britha's brother, Lars, emigrated later, and his emigration record states his destination is Northwood.
I would be interested to know if anyone disagrees with this conclusion.
I may still post some of the information from the bygdebøker for translation help. The researcher put together a pedigree for Britha based on the records in the bygdebøker, and there are records for all of them.
Thank you to the many people who helped me get this far! It really seemed like Betsy was lost forever in Norway, but thanks to DNA, I don't think that is the case. |
