Skipper Niels Jacobsen B¿ye is my great, great grandfather. The family story is that he was lost at sea between 1866 and 1872 when his family emigrated to Chicago. At one time he took his then 8-year-old daughter, my great grandma, on a trip to Spain. So he might have been shipping klipfish from Kristiansund. I've searched the partially burned church records many, many times for a notation of his death but to no avail. I have all of the other information about him: born 1 Oct 1828 in ¯stre Moland, father Jacob B¿ye, mother Bertha Thorsdatter, confirmed 23 Apr 1843; m in Kristiansund to Johanna Marie Kolbensen Aug 1855; shows up in the 1865 census under Ole Kolbensen's family.
I've looked for records of ships and their captains. I've found that they may only be accessible in person. If that's true, I'd be happy to hire someone knowledgeable to help me. But if there is another resource with online access, that would be wonderful.
Would his death have been recorded in the church records? Is there a set of duplicate records somewhere that wasn't burned?
Additionally, is there an archive of the history of Kristiansund during that period? My other great, great grandfather, Martin Christian Christensen, also in Kristiansund, was Niels' best friend. Martin brought both families to Chicago in 1872 where two of their children married.
Thanks so much. |

Last line is unreadable. Niels Jocobsen Bøye`s death record is probably among these.

Yes, I had found young Hans in 1866, and in 1865 and 1867 two Christensen children. Are you seeing Niels? I've looked at these pages a hundred times.

I've been through the years 1865 thru 1872 twice tonight and don't see any hint of Niels. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thanks. Dorie |

Because the books are burned and the majority of last line is missing, only e few names are readable, I believe he was rec. there. I have read the pages from 1865-72 twice, Niels Bøyes death record seems to have been on the missing line.
They also lost a son Niels Sept. 22. 1865, age 2,5.
It must have been a hard time for the mother Johanna Marie loosing two sons a her husband in ca 5 years.
Probate registers from Kristiansund after 1857 is not online but will be hopefully in a few years.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read all of that. I had also found young Niels. Their friends, the Skipper Christensen and his family, lost young children in that period too. I also really felt for Johanna Marie. She came with her father, two children, and the Christensens to Chicago in 1872, then totally dropped out of sight. By the 1880 census, the children had gone out on their own, either in marriage or boarding and working. I couldn't find her in any vital records. So I don't know what happened to her, I have good records of my grandma's life, Johanna and Niels' daughter, from 1872 to 1946.
Do you know anything about the Hovedrule in which records of mariners were recorded? And, do you know of a genealogy group in Kristiansund? I came across a few months ago and I must have been so excited that I didn't bookmark it and now can't find it.
Thanks again for all your help. Dorie |

Please don't feel any urgency. They've been there for a long time and they will continue to be. I've been looking for Niels for years. My genealogy journey started with his wife Hannah. I was aware that we had lots of info about the Christensen's but nothing about the women. So I started looking. When I found her on the ship's manifest with her family and the Christensen's, I was hooked. Thanks for any time and experience you can give, whenever you can.

I did find it, and somehow managed to identify it. Can you translate?
I hesitate to ask one more thing, but since you're looking at these, can you tell what people died of? I'm not asking you to find all of these individuals, heavens no. But many of the causes of death are the same. I have someone here who has translated some of the old Norwegian, but he can't figure these out. I've read that by this period everyone was vaccinated, and documented, for smallpox. I'm wondering if another disease had come and taken so many children, or if conditions were so that many young ones died.

Most people died of "Tæring" Tuberculosis and "Alderdom" of age and by the sea many drowned as fishemen.
Some words are not easy to read. Mariage (July-August) 1855. ...rl (ungkarl) bachelor and "Styrmand" Mate Nils Bøye "født i "born on Tromøen (Tromøy) Moland age 27 (father) Jacob Bøye "Pigen" Maid Johanne Marie Kolbensen born in Kristiandsund age 18 (father) Ole Colbensen.
Best men; Christoffer Olsen and ..Sildseth? They met 3 times in the church before the wedding; July 1-8-15. Last coulmn, unreadable, are the vaccination record for both.
