I'm hoping someone can help me trace a name change for my G-Grandmother (GGM) and her family. My GGM was born 18 March 1865 near Vinstra. Her name was Ane Amundsdatter Massinglokken and her parents were Amund Mortensen and Karen Andreasdatter and lived on the farm of Massing. I found them in the 1865 census for Nordre Fron. The next record I found for them was on a passenger list for them when they emigrated in July, 1869. The passenger list has them listed as Amund Mortensen (and family). The first record I have of them in the US is the 1870 census for the state of Wisconsin. In that census, they have the name of Amund Lerbakken, which is the name they also used when they settled finally in Minnesota. Sometime between when they were living on the Massing farm near Vinstra and when they lived in Wisconsin, they adopted the name of "Lerbakken". I assume that they must have lived for a short time at some place called "Lerbakken" or "Leirbakken". There are several place names in Norway for called Leirbakken, is there any way I could find out if they lived in one of those places before emigrating?
I've always wondered where they adopted that last name and am hoping someone can give me some pointers to help track that down.
Thanks in advance,

Record for emigration out of Oslo show that Anes grandparents, Andreas Olsen and Anne Olsdatter, emigrated together with Amund Mortensen and his family, link.
The grandparents were living on Bakken in 1865. This could very well have been called Leirbakken or Lerbakken.
Names of farms in Rygh show Leirbakken in Kvam, Nord Fron.
In the map only Bakken is shown.

Thank you very much for the replies. This is very interesting.
One question, could the Bakken farm mentioned in this link actually be a different one? I notice that the Parish is listed as "Kvikne", which is just west of Vinstra and I see there is a farm named "Bakken" just west of the Massing farm where my G-Grandmother and her family was living on in 1865 when she was born.
Again, thank you very much for the replies. |

quote: A family tree that calls the father Amund Mortensen Vistadeiet: http://www.denbrook.com/Genealogy/getperson.php?personID=I145731&tree=Denbrook
I guess this is a compliment, this site (www.denbrook.com/Genealogy) is my site.
However, it does indicate a change that I wish I would have made when I created it. Instead of using "...sen" or "...dtrs" as the family name, I used the placename. For example I probably should have listed "Mortensen" as the family name for Amund Mortensen instead of "Vistadeiet". And I listed my G-Grandmother as "Ane Amundsdatter Massinglokken" when I probably should have just used "Ane Amundsdatter". Or, listed her as "Anne Lerbakken" which is how she was known in Minnesota before she got married to Ole Olsen Houg. But too many to change now.
And yup, I'm an Otter Tail county, Minnesota person.

Yes maybe that's right about the names - but it's a wonderful website, a treasure for all in the extended family. |
