First of all there must of been an earlier kirke at Attraa (& variations of spellings) as they are in the Kirke records well before 1800's and this family immigrated in 1836 for USA. Anyone have a photo of earlest Kirke? I have been searching for this Halvor Knudsen and Birthe Torgersdtr Saaler family for five days now. And have found another couple that is mixed in with this family--namely the one that had a child, Kari born in 1804. This family appears to be Halvor Jonsen Saaler and Birgith Torgersdatter. Are they the same family? This Kari age 34 is listed as a daughter to my Halvorson's who immigrated in 1836 for first Rutland County, IL. Then settled in Adams Twp, LaSalle County, IL. Where does this Kari/ Carin belong? Families on Ancestry.com are all over the page in listing the real info. Thanks for any help with this! Lorene

Sometimes helpful to know what other researchers of the same family have found.

From Norwegian Immigrants to the United States: a Biographical Directory 1825-1843 says this about Halvor Knudsen Saaler & Birgit Tarjesdatter, on pg 59-60:

Halvor the son of Knut Halvorsen Maarheimsrud and Liv Nilsdatter Maarheimsrud baptized in Tinn 3 Dec 1788 m. 28 May 1811 to

Birgit Tarjesdatter baptized the 12th Sunday after Trinity, 1784 (no parish given) parents are Torger Gunbjĝrnsen Stuvetraa and Helga Johnsdatter Maarheim. Birgit was married 1st on 29 May 1804 to Halvor Johnsen Ormsjorden and he died early.

They and their 5 children arrived in New York from Gothenburg, Sweden on 16 Aug 1838 on the Republic. Sources cited are the Tinn parish registers, Tinn-soga II; 275; 1850, 1860 Illinois census, LaSalle county marriages; History of LaSalle county, II:23, 184

The child Kari / Carin must belong to Birgit's first husband who was also named Halvor.

Saaler exist in the 1865 census for Tinn, and it was not a sub farm.

You people are wonderful! This makes more sense! Got confused on the Halvor Saaler and Birgit having this child in 1804. Did find a Torjer b. 1807 that must of been theirs also. Child must of died. But have found that Halvor Knutsen was also listed as Saaler. Now I have the right background and can move forward with that this Kari/ Carin did belong in this family as a half sister. May have more to ask! Thank you so much! Lorene

The meaning of the name Saaler is unknown, in 1665 and 1723 Saaler was a sub farn under Skaarberg/Skċrberg in Attraa.
- Stuvetraae, spelled Stuffuertrodt un 1593 and means most likely "Stubber av tre" Stubs of trees.
- Ormsjord, norse mans name Orm; Orms soil/land, most likely named after the first settler Orm.
- Marumsrud or Marum (The ending rud means to clear the land)
The farm is located next to and is named after he river Maar/Mċr starting from the mountain lake Mċrvatn on the mountain plateau Hardangervidda.
