The Halvar Johannesen family emigrated to America in 1855 settling at Capron Illinois...raised a big family ..... name became Johnson...including Johanne(John), Thore(Tom), Gunder(Jenner), Guilnild(Nellie), Oliver and Nels. .....I would be interested in hearing from any of my long lost relatives. My great grandfather is Oliver who made his way to Canada in 1909 with his extended family.

Halvor Johannesen and his wife and children Johannes, Thor, Gunder and Gunhild left from Bø, Telemark in 1855 stating their intention to go to 'Amerika'.
Telemark fylke, Bø, Ministerialbok nr. 8 (1849-1861), Inn- og utflyttede 1855, side 362.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1351&idx_id=1351&uid=ny&idx_side=-348

The family had earlier left Seljord for Bø in 1854 and registered their leaving again with the parish minister.
Telemark fylke, Seljord, Ministerialbok nr. I 12B (1850-1865), Inn- og utflyttede 1854, side 488.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1403&idx_id=1403&uid=ny&idx_side=-261

The record of their leaving for America clearly indicates that at least the two youngest children were born in Seljord.

Thanks Hopkins. Are you related somehow ? How did you know of this information? There is some record of another child (Martin?) Andrew (Kleven?) Johnson. Do you have any information on him - supposedly older than Johannes ?? I really appreciate your help on this.

Halvor and Rannei with the son Johannes moved to Sauherad in 1845, #7, 8 and 9.

In March 25 1848 the family moved to Seljord, right page.

No, not related at all to the best of my knowledge.

You had posted two separate queries to this forum and I wondered if they were actually about the same family. (Advice - keep postings in one thread unless they are about different family groups.)
In your other posting you specifically mentioned Seljord and Bø and an unnamed child born 1843 in Bø.
In this thread you mentioned a father by name and I hoped the first child listed in your posting might be the first born. So I went to the online digitized birth records for Bø and paged through them looking for a child born in 1843 to a father named Halvor Johannesen (or similar). That didn't take very long so I also checked the "moving in and out of the parish" records.

The Norwegian church records for these areas are easily available. It just takes a bit of study and practice to learn to extract the valuable information you can find there. There are also published books in Norwegian of history/genealogy for Bø, Seljord and Sauherad areas of Telemark.

I have one ancestral line from a Telemark district quite close to these - but not the same.

Thank you Einar and Hopkins for your help. This has helped to trace my Ancestors on the paternal side. This information was pretty well unknown as my paternal Great, great grandfather was a dysfunctional father who left the family to go gold mining ....unsuccessfully !

New - I hoping someone can give me a rough translation of the Norwegian in this Parish Record from the County Akershus, Eidsvoll Parish, Eidsvoll Miscel, 1815 to 1865.....page 0 (the forward) appears to be a 1974 copy of deaths ????

It would help if the records are titled properly as "Death Records" instead as "Miscellaneous" - who would deal with that ?

"Who would deal with that?"

What do you mean? Deal with what?

You expect someone to change the records to make it easier for Americans to read them? Why? The records were created in Norway.

We are indeed fortunate that the parish records such as might still exist are available to us for our research online at no cost. We use what is available and we learn to deal with that ourselves.

You're not understanding my meaning Hopkins. I appreciate having access to the records and I don't expect them to be changed into English. The TITLE of these records is listed as MISCELANEOUS. It would be helpful to everyone if the title read DEATH RECORDS. .....that is all I'm referring to. I spent considerable time going through it looking for something other than death records because the title (MISCELANEOUS) indicates there is miscellaneous information.....(ie) NOT just death records.
