I'm looking for the baptismal records for Borre Johnson born on July 10, 1860 or 1861. He emigrated to the USA in 1882. He was born in Oslo Norway. We do not have any information on his parents. Any information would be welcomed.

Might be spelled slightly different in Norway. Here is a Børe Jonassen born in 1861. From the 1865 Norwegian Census.

NHDC 1865

This Børe was born in October of 1861, not a good match for your date of July 10. How sure are you on the day and month. See number 51.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=1605&idx_id=1605&uid=ny&idx_side=-38

Probably can eliminate him as he is still in Norway for the 1900 Norwegian Census.

NHDC 1900

Here's a link to a Find-a-Grave memorial at Rendahl Cemetery in Dunseith, Rolette, North Dakota which could be for the man lyndal40 found:
Borre Johanson born 10 June 1860 and died 27 Jan 1914. Is this your Borre?

First thing - I do apologize for not supply enough information to you. I do hope this will help. According to family records Borre Johnson was born July 10, 1861 or 1860 and died on January 27, 1914 in Rolette County, North Dakota USA. He emigrated to the USA in 1882. Borre married Alma (Lena) Helen Hanson on December 16, 1888. Alma Hanson was born on June 9, 1872 in Ottertail County, Minnesota. She died on May 5, 1953 Bottineau County, North Dakota. Borre and Alma had 12 children - Clara, Johnny, Bennie, Minnie, Henry, Norman, Arla, Julia (first Julia died), Myrtle, Gladys and Lela. This information is only from family records and they differ a bit. Some US Census records (1900) list Borre's name as Bernoa Jonson or Bore Johnson or Bernsa Jonson. To make matters worse, it appears some US census records (1910) even list his name as Berry Sompson or Benj Sompson or Benj Sampson. I doubt some of these US census records are completely accurate, but they do confirm and list the correct ages of the children. I was hoping to get to the bottom of all these inconsistencies by finding his Norwegian birth records (church) and maybe his emigration information. Again I'm sorry for not supplying this earlier.

JaneC - Yes the grave at Rendahl is our Borre Johnson. I didn't notice that the grave lists a different birthdate also - June 10, 1860. I now have records that show 3 different birthdates. June 10, 1860 is on the tombstone, July 10, 1860 is on a handwritten 1900 census and July 10, 1861 is listed in the family records. I tried looking for birth records at the Digitalarkivet web site, but I didn't know enough about the Oslo area where he was born. Appreciate anything else you can find. Thanks again.

I believe the birth record #152 from the Faberg Parish register would be correct as well as the Faberg 1865 census which lists Bore Johansen as born in 1860 - and finally a birth date of July 15. Some of Borre's relatives do have the last name of Johansen and are buried beside him in the cemetery. Are you able to tell me anything about Borre's parents? The 1865 census shows Johan Mortensen as his father and Mari Christensdatter as his mother. Does this agree with the #152 birth record? It is so nice to finally know the municipality where he was born. We are planning to come to Norway this year in either May or June. We are so excited to find where are relatives came from. Can you also give me the correct spelling for Borre's name. The birth record shows Borre (with 2 dots above the o) but the census show Bore (with a slash through the o). Again thank you.

Yes, they are the same names, however I would be more comfortable with more information connecting your ancestor to the number 152 in the Norwegian records, before we make a definitive determination that they are one and the same person. Too many discrepancies still out, Including name, birth dates etc.

The family used the name Sampson in the 1910 Census shown above. Then the surviving members used the Sampson name in 1915 and 1925 in the North Dakota State Census. In the 1930 US Census, the mother Alma used Sampson and the children used Johnson.

1930 United States Federal Census
Name: Alma Sampson
Gender: Female
Birth Year: abt 1874
Birthplace: Minnesota
Race: White
Home in 1930: Willow Lake, Rolette, North Dakota
Map of Home:
Marital Status: Widowed
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Household Members:
Name Age
Alma Sampson 56
Bennie Johnson 36
Lelia Johnson 17

The family used Johnson in the 1900 US Census and after death of the father, still used Johnson in the 1920 and 1940 US Census. Very strange.

A side note, I did not find any Børre Sampson or even any Børre Sam,,,, in the 1865 Norwegian Census.

That is strange lyndal40.
brejohns, will you please post your records - I mean transcriptions such as lyndal40 has posted. Obviously this is at your discretion, but I think it would help! Thanks.

It is too soon to know your ancestor's identity in Norway - the connection has not yet been established.

Brejohns, I wonder if you are aware of these Family Tree's on Ancestry.com. There are about 18 of them. All very similar and all starting with.

Johan Mortensen Boro
Birth 17 May 1816 in Vingrom, Faaberg, Norway
Death 12 Dec 1898 in Hancock, Iowa, United States

Married to

Mari Christensdattar Lunde
Birth 10 Feb 1824 in Faaburg, Norway
Death 11 Mar 1905 in Des Lace, Ward, North Dakota, United States

They had seven children including

Borre Johansen Borolien
Birth 15 Jul 1861 in Vingrom, Faaberg, Norway
Death

This is very likely the same family that I found in the 1865 Norwegian Census. Is it the same Borre Johnson that you are seeking, Maybe but what light can you shed on this family. Is there any know connection in your family records to these parents or other siblings of your Borre Johnson or Sampson?
