Wow - what great information. And to think I was going through Digitalarkivet records database by database. However you did this sure works for me. I will go through the lists and see what may possible checks out with my other information. Thank you so much. I do have one question on Norwegian spelling. Is the o with the line through it used interchangably with the o with 2 dots on top? Copies of his signature contained the o with the dots. Again I appreciate all this tinformation.

You have given me at least 4 good leads to check on baptismal records. I'm wondering if the emigrant listed as Borre Johanness Dahl Ringsaker would be the same as the Bore Johannesen listed on the census list born in 1859 in Ringsaker?

Sorry about the last message. I can see now that these 2 Borres have different birth dates. I wonder if you can run a similar search for Borre Samson or Sampson?

My very first legal document of Borre/Barny Samson/Johnson is the Declaration Record from Jackson County, WI. The document lists Barny Samson born in Norway 1859 came to the USA at the port of New York in May 1882 and is dated April 1885. If he came to the US in 1882 where was he was almost 3 years? Would there be some census records I could check? The second legal document is his citizenship filing in Ramsey County ND dated May 23, 1888. Another 3 year span. It appears to me that he used the last name of Samson when he first emigrated here, however his last name changes to Johnson when he marries in 1889. It would only make sense since he uses Samson on his first legal documents that his Norwegian connection should be Samson too. But again some things don't always add up the way you expect.

There are state level censuses in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Dakota Territory in 1885. Wisconsin's only names the head of household and each person as an age / sex category within a household after that. It is searchable at familysearch.org. Minnesota's includes every person by name and is searchable at familysearch and greatrivers. Dakota Territorial is indexed and searchable at the database at NDSU archives.

I was able to check the Dakota Territory Census earlier, but he was not listed there. I will now check the census listing in WI and MN at the link you provided. Thank you.
