Interesting file. About the snow, I hope you're right for your neighborhood but we got a dusting here in Fargo, today....

Sorry it's taken so long, but after 3 trips to the cemetery we were finally able to read the foot stones. As I said previously the large head stone says "JOHANSON" and "HERREN ER MIN HYRDE MIG FATTES INTET." Here is what Borre's foot stone says:

BORRE JOHANSON
FODTD 10 JULI 1860
DODD 27 JAN 1914

However, Alma's foot stone says:

Alma H. Johnson
Born June 9 1872
Died May 5, 1953

I will have to contact "Find A Grave" and ask them to correct Borre's death date.

I'm not sure if this information helps or not.

I went back to the Bygdebok for Eid to see if I could translate anything of value. On page 183 it states Just Mortenson 1818-1899 and his wife Kari Andersdatter probably kept the home on the mountain in the 1840 era, but from about 1850 leased a place. It then says something about registering in 1858 and that Just bought Mountain of danger and ten years after sold his matted house to Johan Jonson Bjorke. In 1873 Just moved to the cave that Berget sold on auction." At least this is what my translator brought up - so this may not be accurate. Did we ever establish a connection between Borre and Justin. Did Justin ever go to Wisconsin (1884)? It says Borre left for Amerika in 1882.

There is a connection between Just and Børge in the 1865 Norwegian Census. And we found both a Børre and a Just leaving Norway in the years of 1882 and 1884. However no connection between your Borre Johnson or Sampson and the two brothers from Norway. Nor no good connection between anyone in America and Just.

Thanks. If I remember correctly we couldn't find a connection to a Borre Samson either. I think I'll start back at the beginning and review all the information you've provided. 18 pages is a lot!

Well your trip[s] to the cemetery do help to eliminate one of the birthdates for Borre, which is a good thing. It would have been a good thing, too, if it had pared down the number of surnames for Borre, but this is Life & you don't always get what you want.

Brejohns you have been a real "sport" to get all the additional documents needed for Borre, only those but the most truly dedicated would have blown it off by now. Unfortunately you haven't been rewarded with a clear definitive answer about Borre's Norway origins.

I've read through the pages 10-18 again and all I can see to do is a "Hail, Mary" in the form of gathering information on the August Johanson buried in 1911 in Rolette county, to see if there is any connection between him and Borre.

Logically, it's based on the biographical details about a Gust Johnson in Rolette in 1900 (born Apr 1866 / 1867, migrating in 1884), the fact that there is really no one carrying the Johanson surname during Borre's lifetime in Rolette and yet both Borre's headstone and August's headstone are each inscribed with Johanson. Why? (And since I'm there who has been putting flowers on August's grave?) Perhaps August's death generated an obituary or an estate settlement that might reveal a valuable detail. We can only hope.

In Norway your search has not been greatly assisted by the void in parish records for Eid and for dearth of dødfallsprotokol in Møre og Romsdal.which for Just Mortenson (1899)especially might tell of his sons in America and for Ane Justsdatter (1934) mentioning nieces and nephews. I haven't found any reason why these records are unavailable (you know like a fire, pastor leaving with the books, etc). Just don't know why they are not there.

There is a website that has posted an index to the earlier (1960s) version of Romsdal bygdebok. Perhaps the webmaster there might have an answer for you, I'll come back and post the link.

I hate to give up on anything. Maybe it's my Norwegian roots! In fact, we are traveling to Norway (first time) to visit relatives in the Voss and Hamar areas in June. Maybe some day I'll locate more information and we could visit the area that Borre came from. You felt there may be a connection to August Johanson. Oddly when I do a search on the ND Public Death Index no Johanson comes up - but if I do a search for August Johnson I get 2 hits, but their death dates are in 1912 and 1913 and both were residents of other counties. When you search "Find A Grave" it does give you 3 hits in ND.

1. August Johanson - Perth Cemetery
b. July 28 1872 d.Sep 6, 1915

2. August Johanson - Little Prairie Cemetery
b. 1865 d. Aug 28, 1911

3. August W Johanson - Mandan Union Cemetery
b. 1839 d. Feb 2, 1926

jkmarler - do you feel #2 should be researched further? I could maybe see if I can find anything additional on him. As for the flowers - since I help clean this cemetery maybe I can find something out. Or it may just be during cleanup someone placed them on the wrong grave. We have a lot of wind at this cemetery and someone may have placed them on the wrong grave. Just a chance. I could maybe see if the library has any information on his death in the Dunseith Magnet for 1911.

I will check out the earlier bygdebok. Thanks.

Yes look into #2. Mistakes can be repeated. There is no Johanson in Rolette county yet your guy gets tagged with it. (A possible scenario I keep running over in my mind is when Borre died and his stone was ordered did someone remember his brother having Johanson for his last name and so Borre's stone was ordered that way? ) August Johanson dies in 1911, so if an obituary was published on him it might mention surviving siblings or some other useful detail. His headstone is a "substantial" one, so someone spent $ on it. If he is a single man, no descendants to speak of, maybe it was paid for from his estate? 1911 is before the tuberculosis sanitarium at Dunseith so its likely August was a Rolette resident rather than someone who relocated to the sanitarium and then died & was buried away from their home.

The details which point to Børre Justson to be your Borre Johnson, are the same basic items: first name the same Børre / Borre (the ø deNorwegianized to o), month and day of birth are the same 10 July, year of migration is the same 1882. But other detail cuts against it, in the form of his surname, in a confusing way, with so many different practices followed Johnson, Johanson, Samson.

Similarly August Johanson / Just Justson presents similar kinds of issues. The birthyear is the same 1865 between the two. And if Gust Johnson in the census = August Johanson on the headstone, then the year of migration 1884 is the same between him and Just Justson. But why would Just become August? There is a perfectly fine English equivalent for Just in Justin...? These are the imponderables.

Glad that you will keep after it. Take no prisoners!

I haven't had any luck finding information on Gust Johnson. I was wondering if someone could explain the information on line 152 from the message on 14/01/2014 from lyndal40:

"Here is a Børe Johansen born 1860.

NHDC 1865

Looks like his birth date is July 15, 1860. See number 152.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8935&idx_id=8935&uid=ny&idx_side=-88"

I'm wondering what other information is listed for this Bore Johansen? Thanks.

Yes, Jackie is correct, that is the one I found and had great hope for until Jackie found that he had died in Norway in 1874.

Thanks - I plan to keep looking. However, I have several events that will take up some of my time. My folks celebrate their 65th anniversary on June 1 and we leave for a trip to Norway on June 18. Our first trip in 40 years! It may be a while before I can get back to the research. I want everyone to know I truly appreciated all your help and suggestions. It's been an interesting ride!

I found information for one August Johanson - the one located in the Perth Cemetery and listed as #1 in the message dated April 16. I found a Rolla Centennial History Book 1888-1988 and on page 308 is the history of August Johanson from Sweden.

"August Johanson was born in June of 1871 in Sweden to Gustave and Katherine Johanson. When he first came to this country, he worked for his brother, Pete. He later homesteaded the present Johanson farm located 2.5 miles south of Rolla.

Olive Kennedy Johanson was born November 17, 1885 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Robert and Annie Kennedy. They moved to Rolette County when Olive was young. In June of 1903 she and August were united in marriage. Of this union, two boys and three girls were born. August passed away September 1915, at the early age of 44. On July 16, 1917 Olive married Alfred Johanson (August's brother) in Bisbee."

So we can scratch this Johanson off the list of possible relatives. I still have not found any information relating to the Johanson at Little Prairie Cemetery.

Thanks for the update. Obviously didn't match the biographical data on the fellow at Little Prairie, but good to scratch him off the list.

I've been search through family genealogy notes from my husband's aunt Shirley and found that Borre Johnson was born in Akershus, Norway. She felt the birthdate was correct as July 10, 1860, but I'm still a firm believer that Borre and Alma Helena Hanson's marriage certificate is correct and he was born on July 10, 1859. I know we already have 18 pages of information on Borre, but I do not believe we searched in the Akershus section. Hoping someone may still have some way to check on this lead. Thanks.

Never say die...
But there is no there, there in Akershus. The only male person of the 49 in the 1865 census whose given name starts with Bø and whose last name starts with Jo living in Akershus is the man born in 1802 in Hurdalen.
