Seems a little too old to be Syvert's friend but he is buried in the same cemetery as Sigurd, Ingebright Rye:

Thank you again for the excellent service you all have rendered me on Norway-Heritage!
The only issue that make me wondering and keep me curious, is the fact the Border Crossings from Canada to U.S., 1895-1956 states Name: Syver N Fodnas.
However, all other records in U.S. states name: Sigurd Fodness.
I cannot stop asking myself: for what reason – why did he change his name?
Is Sigurd a more common name and more used in the U.S. than the Syver?

It is hard to say why a person changes his name. Maybe more can be found about that. Maybe you can even contact a descendant (see the obituary for son Nels posted earlier).

Minnesota Death Records are available from Minnesota Historical Society (mnhs). Website: www.mnhs.org.
The parents may be named on the original death certificate. This information isn't shown online at the mnhs website. Finding the parents' names for SIGURD will help to certainly prove that he is the same as SYVER. If the forum does not find the parents for "Sigurd Fodness" another way, you may want to order this death record. It is inexpensive to order a death certificate. When you order, ask for death certificate # 1969-MN-028920.

Another way to double-check if SIGURD = SYVER is to look at his marriage record and his children's birth records. The latter should be available also at Minnesota Historical Society.

Death record for Sigurd Fodness says he died Lyon County, Minnesota, and was born 02 May 1884.
Emigration for Syver Nils. Fadnes age 20 in 1905, so he's born about 1885, in N. Aurdal, and traveling to Lyon County, Minnesota.
"Your" Syver = Syver Nilsen, born 02 May 1883 in Nord-Aurdal, Oppland, Norway.
jkmarler showed "your" Syver's family on Fodnes in 1900. Syver is not with them.
