Yes, I guess there's nothing to suggest that Jenny moved to England alone as a young adult which was maybe my presumption; it may just as likely be that her parents moved across when she was a child and Agnes could have been a sister. This is going to keep me busy for a while!

Wow! If that's from ancestry.com I don't know how I failed to pick that up. I take my hat off to you! My great, great grandfather now has a name and a whole new research avenue opens up... Very many thanks Jane and all!

And it looks like there is another possible birthyear. Looked briefly and that will add another 2 names to the 1900 census list.

Jackie, a brief footnote to this - I checked the 1901 UK census and did not find a Jenny Larsen/son anywhere. There are about 20 Larsen/son's listed for Grimsby in that census, not all Norwegian, but I found none which suggest a link to Jenny. Hence the inference is she was still in Norway then, so we should be able to locate her somewhere in the 1900 Norwegian census.

Jane, a footnote to this. In my (limited) experience, Julius is not a particularly common forename in Norway. Intriguingly, there is a marriage record for one Julius Gustav T Larsen in Grimsby in Q3 1900 to either Lillie Mumby or Bertha Marie Seifort. Is there a chance this could be a brother to Jenny ?? Can't find them in the 1901 UK census though.

I see the father's name from the marriage record gives Jenny Larsen's father 2 patronymics Johnson and Larsen. What is going on with that?

There were a couple of Jenny Larsens from Bergen and so checking for father's names in the baptism database 1815-1894, there were only 2 Julius Larsen's fathering children: Julius Nickolai Larsen a snedkersvend and Julius Stephanus Larsen a sailor, a machinist, a dampskibsmachinist. None of their children 1882-1894 were named Jenny. There are at least 50 Jennys baptised within the search years of 1878-1882.

There were 8 Jenny Larsons in the 1891 Bergen census transcription. Here is a link to the one born in 1878, her father Joh. Larsen is on the prior page:

http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=48&filnamn=berg1891&gardpostnr=11562#nedre

The other one close to search years Jenny Berentine Larsen b. 1883, father is Martenus Larsen:
