And again, thank you! How interesting that - if my very beginning study of this part of Norway's geography is correct, Samson had the surname, but Synneve was actually from this region. I understand that the naming system was largely patrinomic, so find this an interesting coincidence. My other ancestor line from Norway, the Swensons, is from the other coast of the country, so am glad also to have a connection to the stunningly beautiful fjord areas.
I will also be adding those spellings to my lists for checking.
From the Wikipedia link, I believe I may have enjoyed some of the scenery through here, when I watched the Norwegian Public TV video from their "slow TV" series, about the train ride. I will have to go back and check that out again. I have been exploring Kinn and the other islands in the area via Google Earth. My husband is as impressed as I am with the beauty. Helps that he loves to fish! Samson left behind some lovely fishing grounds when he came to America....but perhaps the fishing economy was not as good as needed for his new family.... |

The page on which your family is listed, has a date of April 12 at the top of the page.
Thank you. I will need to go look that up, as now I'm wondering what his occupation was at the time. If the city directory gave it as "traveling" and my mom's birth certificate listed it as "salesman," that would be a match of sorts. Noticed the listing in a Minneapolis directory as "messenger," too. He must have had a love of moving around, perhaps? |

A bit more on Dagny Offerdahl:
There was a notice in the American Journal of Nursing, Vol. XXV, No. 3, pg 245, of March 1925 that stated that Dagny had attended a meeting of the St. Paul Hospital Alumnae Association. At this meeting it was announced that she had accepted a position as Obstetrical Ward supervisor at St. Luke's Hospital in Davenport, IA. Dagny had graduated from the nursing school as St. Luke's in 1923.
I found this information by just entering her name into Google and going back a few pages; with the new info, the article can be accessed more easily by entering her name and nurse and St. Paul.
This was exciting to me not only because it was another link to Robert Offerdahl's next oldest sister, but it was the first time I ever encountered a relative that had worked in my field, maternal-child health care. This also seemed like quite a feat for Dagny, as she was only 27 y.o. at the time. Now I'm wondering what type of doctors she worked for after she left Davenport. |

Just a wee bit of info on Aagot, culled from the Chronicaling America website:
Per the Minneapolis Journal, 5 June 1901, page 7, image 7, Aagot Offerdahl was listed as having just graduated from 8th grade.
I believe the school was listed, but it was late at night, and I omitted that info from my notes. If anyone is seeking her history, the above source listing should take them directly to the article. The whole page was pretty much a listing of graduate names. |

Samson Offerdahl born Oct 1861 according to the 1900 US census in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota (posted earlier).
He is found as S. O. J. Offerdahl in some US records, for example "S.O.J. Offerdahl, of 1412 Rollins Avenue SE, applied for a building permit for a new construction of a home at 2102 Como Avenue SE., [Minneapolis, Minnesota]"
Here is Samson Olai Johnsen Tansø or Offerdal, age 27, married, born about 1861, from Kinn, registering to emigrate from Bergen 26 March 1888: http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000679670 |

Lærdal make sence. Aardal/Årdal where Offerdal is located was a sub parish in Lærdal until 1862 when Aardal became an independant parish.
Or this one? Jon Olsen born Jan. 26. 1834. Parents; Ole Jonsen Offerdal and Sophie Ingebrigdsdatter #25

All of this information is so exciting to have! I deeply thank all of you for providing it so generously. I first learned of Samson and Synneve less than a year ago, and thanks to your kind help I can now go back at least one more generation, bringing that line back as far as my mother's maternal line has already been uncovered. I can barely keep up with noting all of this down! Funny how I'm looking for a man (Robert) born barely 100 years ago, and yet I feel I know more about his parents, sisters, and grands than I do about him, my own grandpa! I will be seeing some people on Thursday that may be able to connect me with someone who knows their way around Ancestry.com, so I can follow that lead about the family tree there. |

I am going to be starting to look for the divorce records for Robert Offerdahl and his wife (my grandmother Eleanor). There are 2 possible counties for me to check in Wisconsin.
Does anyone here know if divorce laws back (likely 1930s) then required the person seeking the divorce to initiate paperwork in a particular county? Such as, could they seek divorce in a different county, even if they no longer lived in the county where they had previously lived as husband and wife. I am going to begin with the assumption that my grandmother initiated the divorce.
Since I have no date of divorce, but do have a pretty wide open time window of 1930 - 1935, and addresses from 2 counties, I'm just hoping to streamline the initial requests. Thanks. |

My experience (getting 5 divorce court records over the years from 1920 to 1980) is that the divorce is filed for by the aggrieved party in the county they currently reside without regard to the county in which the marriage occurred or the county in which the couple lived which might also be the same county coincidentally or not. Divorces regulations vary by state but in my experience (Texas and North Dakota) but had no tangible effect on getting the record. |
