Hi, I know this forebear of mine married in 1860 Oslo to Lovise Jensdr but I'm wondering if there is any way of finding out where he himself was born. His father is given as Franz Gysberdis Rittinger so might not be Norwegian. Carel emigrated to the UK where he said his birthplace was Surinam Dutch, Holland, and Denmark but who knows ??? Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers
John

The databases of FamilySearch.org give -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NWS3-3LS

Perhaps there is some little additional note in the original record not indexed for the database?

John, in the 1861 UK census, there is a record for Carel Rittinger aged 26 born Holland, no marital status given and no mention of a wife, living as a boarder with widow Mary Coward, a grocer & baker, and her son at Southgate Street, Hartlepool.

There is then a marriage record for him in Hartlepool in 4th quarter of 1862 to Mary Farrell or Isabella Harrison. (GRO reference Hartlepool 10 a 192) Maybe his first wife from Oslo died soon after their marriage ??

No obvious match for him in subsequent UK censuses.

But there is then a death record for Carel J J Rittinger aged 62 in 1st quarter 1901 in Sunderland district (GRO reference Sunderland 10a 428).

There are various records for Rittinger - not a common family name in UK - in NE England which might be descendants.

Maybe you have other info you could share with us which might help forum members unlock further clues.

Correction to above post - he does indeed appear in the 1871 census, where he is listed as Chas Rittinger, occupation commercial clerk, b ca 1839 Holland, with wife Isabella and four children living in Vane Terrace, Dawdon, Durham.

I read it as Carl Jaques Johannes Rittinger was born in Paramaribo in "Syd Amerika" South America, see #45

Paramaribo is the capitol of Suriname in South America.

Kare,

Back in those days, maybe people giving their place of birth - and maybe those recording places of birth - were less "nationalistic" about geography ???

So for Carel born Paramaraibo in what was then the "colony" of Dutch Guyana, maybe there was no inconsistency in saying he was born in Holland.

Thanks everyone for all of this but I do have all details of his 3 marriages and all the children's families. Thanks Kare I do think you are closer to the truth with Paramaribo, Dutch Guyana which would make sense with his other quotes exc ept one. Now all is need is someone with links to that country to track it down there if possible. Thanks again

Marriage in Oslo
28 May 1860
occupation: Contorist?
Carel Jacques Johannes Rittinger
age 21 years 5 months
- born about Dec 1838 or Jan 1839
in Paramaribo, Syd Amerika
father Franz Gysberdis Rittinger,
occupation: --?-- master

The birth month and father's occupation (which I can't read) might be clues worth mentioning in your future searching. Good luck.

Fantastic everyone, thank you for these and the direct responses which have taken me much further than I ever expected to get. I would suggest that he was an 'Accountant' or Accountant's Clerk' when he married which was a profession he documented later and although he didn't have a father a such, he said he was a master builder which is probably what it says in danish on his first marriage. Manmy thanks again .....

Even though Carel is your target, this may be Lovise's birth record transcription:

She is a very good candidate Jackie.

Lovise Jensdatter was born out of wedloc:
Parents; Artillerist Jens Larsen and maid Andrine Nielsdatter, see on top left page #93

Artillerist in Oslo was on Akershus Fortress

Carel`s occ. when he married Lovise 1860 was "Contorist" Clerk.
