Here is an index listing for the first papers of a John Severson in Minnehaha county, SD:

Severson John Minnehaha 09/10/1880 Norway V592 62

Here is the index listing at glorecords.blm.gov site for the original homestead entry for a John Severson in Minnehaha county. There are a couple of John Seversons and probably other spellings as well so don't know for certain if this is yours:
SDMTAA 083559 PatenteeSEVERSON, JOHN 3/20/1884 4357 SD 5th PM 104N - 051W E½SE¼ 9 Minnehaha
104N - 051W Lot/Trct 3 9 Minnehaha
104N - 051W Lot/Trct 4 9 Minnehaha

Here is a John Severson memorial at findagrave with exact birthdate and interestingly two spellings of the surname on the headstone Severson and Sivertson:

Is it this one?

JOHN SEVERSON.

General agricultural pursuits claim the attention of John Severson, who owns a well
improved farm comprising one hundred and sixty acres on section 12, Buffalo township,
Minnehaha county. His birth occurred in Norway on the Sth of June, 1856, his parents being
Severt Olson and Emma Ordal, who emigrated to the United States in 1864. They took
up their abode in Decorah, Iowa, and there continued to reside until 1880, when they came
to South Dakota, the father preempting a quarter section of land in Taopi township, Minne-
haha county. After proving up on this he homesteaded one hundred and sixty acres In
Buffalo township and later sold his preemption, residing on his homestead until the time of
his death in 1903. He won success in his undertakings as an agriculturist and enjoyed recog-
nition among the substantial and respected citizens of his community.

John Severson, who was a lad of eight years when he accompanied his parents on their
emigration to the new world, acquired but a limited education in the pioneer schools of
Iowa. In ISSO, on coming to South Dakota with his father, he took up a homestead in
Taopi township and subsequently traded the property for his present home farm of one hun-
dred and sixty acres in Buffalo township, Minnehaha county. His place is well equipped with
substantial buildings and modern machinery and is a valuable property in every respect,
reflecting the intelligent care and management of its owner, wlio is a progressive and prac-
tical agriculturist.

On July 13, 1884, Mr. Severson was united in marriage to Miss Betsy Neshem, of Fill-
more county, Minnesota, by whom he had ten children, nine of whom survive, namely:
Senvil, who follows farming in Buffalo township; Minnie; Hannah; Anna, the wife of George
Aker; Emma; Mary; Josie; Mabel; and Elmer. All the children live at home except Senvil
and Anna.

Mr. Severson gives his political allegiance to the republican party, while his religious
faith is indicated by his membership in the Norwegian Lutheran church, to which his wife
and children also belong. The period of his residence in Minnehaha county covers more than
a third of a century and he has won an extensive and favorable acquaintance throughout
the community.

WOW> Quite a lot of information but so much of it conflicts that I'm not quite sure whats what. I know the John Siverson/Severson that I'm interested in has a son Fred so that helps eliminate a couple of options. What are the odds that 2 John Severson's were both farmers in Buffalo township, Minnehaha? The names of the children: Senvil, who follows farming in Buffalo township; Minnie; Hannah; Anna, the wife of George Aker; Emma; Mary; Josie; Mabel; and Elmer and Anna. does not match what I know to be correct about the 1880/1900 us census data and no mention of Fred.

Yes, some confusion over the records. Here are two records for Fred. Are they the same Fred, but with different names. Or are they two different Fred's

1900 United States Federal Census
Name: Fred Siverson
Age: 6
Birth Date: Oct 1893
Birthplace: South Dakota
Home in 1900: Buffalo, Minnehaha, South Dakota
Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Son
Marital Status: Single
Father's Name: John Siverson
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Occupation:
Household Members:
Name Age
John Siverson 49
Tilda Siverson 19
Oscar Siverson 17
Ida Siverson 15
Edven Siverson 13
Menda Siverson 11
Elmer Siverson 8
Fred Siverson 6

And a birth record for Fred, Similar but with a different birth year.

South Dakota Births, 1856-1903
Name: Fred Swenson
Birth Date: 5 Oct 1892
Gender: Male
County: Minnehaha
Father's Name: John S Swenson
Mother's name: Mary Brevig
File Date: 16 Oct 1931

Note the file date for the births is not uontil 1931, quite some time after the births. Also the list that Jan Peter has provided as well as the two that I posted just above Jan Peter's list are very close if not exact to the children listed in the 1900 US Census.

Looking at both the story and other families in the neighborhood in 1900, there is an elderly Siver Olson b. Aug 1827 Norway and his wife Emerena? Olson b. Dec 1826 living in the household of their son Siver Olson b. June 1861, these three all came in 1867. They are next to John Siverson on the page. After the Olsons is another family whose last name is Ordahl, Johannes for the first name and it appears that he came later.
