Here is the memorial of Ida Lee at findagrave. Look at the picture of the tall stone (click on it and it will open in another window). It is of Andreas Olson Skomlien and Guree which might go to explaining the family name Lee:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=lee&GSfn=ida&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSst=51&GScnty=3009&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GRid=59903258&df=all&

There are several farms named Skumlien in Vardal.

From Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald Wed. 27 Oct 1920, pg 3:

"Crookston Man Drops Dead from Apoplectic Stroke

Crookston, Minn Oct 26--Crookston man while walking in one of the residence sections of Crookston Monday, Oliver Lee, 15 years foreman of the T.B. Walker lumberyard in Crookston had a sudden stroke of apoplexy and dropped dead.

Mr. Lee was the father of Mrs. O.K. Berget, wife of the Polk county republican chairman and deputy county auditor. Mr. Lee was born in Norway in 1850, coming to the United States when he was 20 years. He came to Crookston in 1884 and was employed by the T.B. Walker mill. When the mill closed here, Mr. Lee was employed by the same concern at Akeley, Minn. He later was a resident of Minneapolis, returned to Crookston a year ago.

The deceased was in the best of health Sunday and did not complain of not feeling well before starting out on his walk.

He is survived by Mrs. O.K. Berget of Crookston; Miss Julia Lee, Minneapolis; Mrs. Clarence Mack, Little Falls, Minn.; Albert Lee, Hong Kong, China; and Mrs. Ralph Riley, Mrs. Frank Freeman, Benjamin and Oliver Lee, Minneapolis. Funeral arrangements have not as yet been made."

A possible 20 year old Olaus Andreasen Borstad leaving # 39:

Regarding the question "where does the surname Lee come from" you should look at the marriage record for Andreas Olsen and Guri Gulbrandsdatter. #1.
Note that Andreas was born at Skumlistuen (Skumlistuen) - i.e. translate Li to Lee.

This from the Scandinavian Obituaries of Western Wisconsin page.

"The name Skumlien means, shadowed slope - shadowed by a mountain or forest. [Obituary] Written by H.A Anderson, June 12, 1932 THE WHITEHALL TIMES - JUNE 16, 1932 [For Hans Anton Skumlien who came from Vardal]

So we find that Skum li en ( as a location ) evolves into Americanized into LEE , supported by Vardal.

This is just a thought.... In Norway there is a tremendous pride in were a family/person makes his homeplace.

Great Work and sluthing!

I was born in Minnesota. My Husband is a stubborn Dutchman farmer of 400 acres - ( 50 acres of just cabbage for sauerkraut ) here in north east Wisconsin. He hunts and fishes as often as farming allows. there is snow here now so we rest-up for spring.

Correct, and Li in Norwegian has exactly the same pronunciation as Lee in America.
