My great grandfather emigrated from Valdres Norway in about 1889.
He lived in Minnesota and South Dakota.
In America he went by the name of Thomas Odden. But it seems his name may have been Tor Knutsen. His father's name was Knut Toresen.
He was born in Skrutvold Opland in 1855.
His wife Marit and two children Knut and Olea came to America on April 12, 1893 - they used the sirname of Odden.
I can't find baptismal records, marriage records for him and have searched under all manner of names to see which ship he sailed on but no luck. If anybody can shed light on this I would appreciate it very much. Marit was from the farm Berg

CherylD, use Norway archives - Digitalarkivet - to find emigrations and church book records (such as birth, marriage, death). This is the website Jackie used above.

Thore K. Odden born N.aurdal age 34 registered 19 April 1889 to depart Oslo, destination Chicago. Record I saw said he used Angelo shipping line. Think this means a ship, S/S Angelo, which departed Oslo (Christiania) for Hull that day (19 April). From there he probably traveled to a port such as Liverpool to board a different ship for the transatlantic voyage.

An online resource for US immigrations is Stephen P.Morse website.

Map Skrautvål and Odden. You can zoom in or out, and choose satellite or map view.

Marit and her family are included in a number of online family trees, for example, on My Heritage. Search on the name Marit Jensdatter Bergsbakkmarke born 1854, died 1941. At least one tree had Jensdotter as the spelling. Online family trees are notorious for errors. Many are sound, but all should be researched and verified.

So apparently the twins Marit and Sønneve are named after their paternal and maternal grandmothers.

Bygdebok for this area may tell more about these families. The Valdres Samband (Norwegian heritage organization) might have a look up volunteer. Bygdebok likely not available online.
