Looking for any Norwegian record of my great-uncle, and have found nothing. He entered the United States at Biloxi in May 1900, a crew member on the Norwegian ship Barossa. In various American records he claims to have been born in Bergen 1 August 1879; father Iver Knudsen, mother Gjertrud ___. I find no Norwegian records of any of this. Growing up in Seattle I remember him as a mostly silent old man, married to my grandmother's sister. They married in the USA the day she arrived from Norway…possibly had never met previously. Never any discussion of his family or personal history, except that he had once altered his last name to avoid prosecution for "jumping ship" as a merchant sailor. |

In the Bergen Baptism 1816-1894 database at the Norwegian Digitalarkivet there are no Iver Gjertin / Iver Gierten born on either 1 or 2 Aug 1879 baptized in any of the covered parish churches in the database.
Also did not find any Iver Gjertin / Iver Gierten in the 1885 census of Bergen at the digitalarkivet. |

The 1920 census shows Hannah as arriving in 1906. Where did they marry? |

Thanks to all for your help. I believe Dodgeboy12 and lyndal40 have found my Uncle Iver's birth and baptism records. Really remarkable.
To answer a question from jkmarler: Johanna Johnsdatter/Johnsen was my grandmother's younger sister. They grew up on a farm near Lygre, Hordaland. Johanna, known to us as Hanna, emigrated at age 30 from Bergen arriving in New York City. The Norwegian emigration record said something like, "hennes forloevende bor i Brooklyn". The next day, 30 October 1906, she married Iver Iverson, a ship's rigger residing in Brooklyn. He had been in the USA 6 years. They married at the Lutheran Pilgrim Mission in lower Manhattan. Had they ever seen each other before? Don't know. In my few meetings with them in the 1950s, they were not given to reminiscing. |

I've enjoyed reading this thread. Ron, I also have an "Iver Iverson" ancestor (Iver Frithjof), who was also a sailor and lived in Brooklyn just prior to that time. :-) It's neat to find these connections. It also highlights the importance of tracing individuals over time... otherwise it is too easy to think you've found an ancestral match when really it was someone else with a similar name! |
