Dear Listers!

I am "stuck" on several genealogical problems in the US, and one of them is as follows:

Philip Olous Phillips, born in Dane Co., WI Dec. 15, 1899 to Norwegian emigrant parents, died at Edgerton, WI May 22, 1953. He married at Edgerton, WI Aug. 28, 1943 to this lady:

Myrtle Devina Neargarder, 28 years old, born at Cambridge, Jefferson Co., WI as the daughter of Morrise Neargarder and Diana Jerstid.

The couple resided at Edgerton, Rock Co., WI, but had no children and divorced in 1946.

Can anyone help me identify Myrtle Neargarder? Birthdate? What became of her? Who were her parents?

I have a feeling I have searched "everywhere", in particular census records, but find absolutely no trace of her!

Thanks a million in advance for your great assistance in this matter!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Not so many Neargarders born in Wisconsin. Here is a Margaret Neargarder (age 28 in 1940), means she would have had to pick up the name Myrtle someplace and that she is the second wife of the guy and that she was divorced by 1943. Lots of ifs:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KWCM-LDD

Well now, this is interesting. Wilson Neargarder's WWII draft registration dated 27 Apr 1942 gives his wife's name as "Myrtle Margaret Neargarder."

A very long shot for a Margaret Devine b abt 1915 in Wisconsin living in Illinois in 1930:

Dear Jackie, lyndal40 and other listers!

Thank you very much for your comments on "my Neargarder problem"!

I agree with you that Wilson Neargarder's wife Myrtle comes very close to "our" Myrtle in age. However, there wasn't much time for Wilson and Myrtle to divorce, and then we have the information that "our" Myrtle was the daughter of Morrise Neargarder and wife Diana Jerstid! Are these names just pure "fantasy"? She was 28 at the time of her marriage to Philip in 1943, and her age at the time of her divorce is given as 31.

Another "enigma" is this middle name Devina. Devine is used as family name, but again I don't understand why her father's name is given as Neargarder!

Thanks again for your assistance in this matter! I will keep my fingers crossed that someone manages to find the answer...!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Well, divorces used to be relatively quickly settled so the date disparity is less alarming to me. The father's name might be a matter of a misplaced ditto--her last name is Neargarder then his last name must be Neargarder. It might also have been an entry in an index rather than the actual record. A visual on the actual marriage and actual divorce record might help matters. So far none of the newspaper sites I use have found any smoking guns.

The Margaret Devine in the 1930 census is also a bit of a problem. The elder brother Edward was born in 1906 in Wisconsin to Michael Edward Devine and Catherine Duneen (according to record) so nothing which clicks with the parents' names. Also Margaret doesn't appear with the family in the 1920 census in Chicago as might be expected. Perhaps she was adopted?

Dear lyndal40, Jackie and other Listers!

I have used the original marriage license, both the original in the Rock Co., WI courthouse in Janesville, WI as well as the copy kept at the State Vital Bureau of Vital Statistics in Madison, WI, and they both show the same! The original divorce record has also been viewed!

You mention the possibility of an adoption. That is of course an option, but then we have the fact that no Morrise Neargarder or Diana Jerstid can be found anywhere! That Jerstid name is also kind of "unusual"...

I am "stumped"!

Dear lyndal40 and other Listers!

I forgot to mention; I have years ago personally talked to numerous relatives of Philip Phillips', but noone was able to tell me anything at all about Myrtle! After all, they were married only three years!

About the Devine family, I don't know what to think... I am not convinced these are the people I am looking for...

Thanks again for your efforts!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

Dear lyndal40, Jackie and other Listers!

Thank you very much for your latest messages!

I never copied the divorce records, and I didn't think of writing a street address, but I am pretty sure Myrtle was a resident of Edgerton, WI, while Philip had moved to Stoughton, WI

At the time of her marriage, Myrtle worked at the Edgerton, WI shoe company!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane
