Just found it also!
Dian S. Gjerstad married Mantriz Christianson (probably Mauritz) 30 January 1903 in Dane county, Wisconsin http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/Content.aspx?dsNav=Ro:20,Nrc:id-5,N:4294963828-4294963811&dsNavOnly=N:1220&dsRecordDetails=R:MR1971793
Which led to a Rootsweb post by a granddaughter, who called Dian "Dina." Said Maurice came to USA in early 1900s with offspring Sina, Anton, Markus, and Esther, then married Dina (no surname stated), lived in Deerfield, Wisconsin, and had seven more children.
Many times when women marry for a second time, the marriage is registered under the surname of the first husband, as you all talked about. In this case her father's surname was entered mistakenly. At least this seems a likely scenario. |

Dear Jane and other Listers!
Thank you very much, Jane, for your latest message!
I am really wondering about the background for Myrtle's Neargarder name, but whether she was married before to a Neargarder or not, the Registrar at Janesville, WI obviously made a mistake when he gave Maurice the last name of Neargarder on the marriage license!
We may never learn the background for this, but the most important thing is: Myrtle has been identified, and we even have a death date for her! Now I hope that someone may come up with Myrtle's obituary...
Thanks again for your great assistance!
Very sincerely yours,
Lars E. Oyane |

Emigration about 1901. A daughter named Signe (?) born in Norway about 1898.
Looks like it is Maurits Kristiansen from Vardal, Oppland. He has a daughter named Signe at right age and they emigrated in 1901. Maurito Christiansen from Gjovick arrived New York on June 28th, 1901. He was headed for Wisconsin. His wife Marie Andreasd. died 10 Mar 1901, and Maurits emigrated with the children 3 months later.
Maurits Kristiansen m G 36 Gjøvik New York Anton Kristiansen m u 10 Gjøvik New York Markus Kristiansen m u 8 Gjøvik New York Asta Kristiansen f u 4 Gjøvik New York Signe Kristiansen f u 3 Gjøvik New York
Btw; Neargarder doesnt have to be French. It could very well be Norwegian... e.g. Nergard or similar. |

It seems that Myrtle got her Social Security Card in IIllinois. So she must have lived there at one time. Maybe that is the Neargarder connection.

In the 1920 Census posted by Jackie, Dena or Dina immigrated in 1901. Here is a Dena immigrating in 1901, travelling with a small chid and going to Darfield (probably Deerfield) Wisconsin. However leaving from Bergen?

Yes! Morrise Neargarder and Diana Jerstid = Maurits Kristiansen (from Vardal) and Dønaat Sjursdtr Gjerstad (from Voss).
For Maurits, no records tie him to any "Neargarder" farm: 1863: Maurits is born on Aschimshougeie. 1865: Census shows him on Engebakken. 1875: Census shows Maurits and brother Anton at Øverby poor-house. 1880: Confirmation record shows him at Øvreby. 1895: Marriage record shows him at Tollerud. 1900: Census shows him at Ulsrud.
And there are no "Nergard" farms in Vardal or Voss, so I doubt the name comes from Myrtle Devina's parents. Seems like she could have been married to a Neargarder...? |

The ELCA database at archives is a bit clunky and unforgiving. You must have a surname and until Christianson came up Myrtle's baptism was unfindable.
The database describes the church as East Koshkonong at Cambridge Wisconsin. Her name is Myrtle Devina. Her parents are named as Moritz Christianson and Dina Christianson. Her birthdate is 6 Oct 1915 and she was baptized 4 Nov 1915. Her faddernes are Johannes Prescott, hustru Janna (?) Flage, Hilma Johnson. |

Her application for a Social Security number (SS-5) might be interesting but spendy at about $35. |

Dear jwiborg, lyndal40, Jane, Jackie and other Listers!
My goodness! I return to my computer after a break, and I see many exciting new messages about Myrtle's family. Thank you all so very very much.
For my purpose I don't need to follow the Christianson-family backwards in Norway, but I presume the information may be very useful to descendants and other researchers, so thank you again for providing it.
The thought that Neargarder could be American for a Norwegian name like Nergard, never really occurred to me. I guess it is possible, but I must admit; I doubt it very much!
Thanks again to all of you for brilliant research!
Very sincerely yours,
Lars E. Oyane |
