i am trying to find the birth of Johanne Ole Selseng. The information that I have seen is that he is the son of Ole Pedersen Selseng and Ragnild Tostendatter Alme. Supposedly he was born in Sogndal 1 Jan 1836. I can't find anything in the archives to support this. The information I saw came from other family trees. I look at this but try to find the actual records. I believe Ole and Ragnild came to America in 1844 but the emigration records seem to be a bit confusing. They came with several children but I don't think Johanne was one of them. In 1844 he would have been quite youg. I think the vessel was the Ørnen. If anyone can take a look at this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Gerhard Næseth's Norwegian Immigrants to United States, Volume 2 1844-1846 lists these children of the couple Ole Pederson Solseng and Ragnhild Tostensdatter Alme:

Martha b. 10 Feb 1832--1913*
Peder b. 11 July 1834-1911*
Ragnhild b.4 June 1836 -1901*
Tosten b. 27 Oct 1838-1840
Christi b. 10 May 1841-1919*
Kari b. 2 Jan 1844 d. 1844 (died during crossing)*
Karen b.20 Sept 1845-1847?
Karen Kirstine b. 15 May 1848 -1933
Tosten b.30 Sept 1850-1857
Andreas Edward b. 12 June 1854 -1878

*children who came with parents on Ørnen

Ole also had a child with another woman Kari Nielsdatter named Peder b. 18 Mar 1827 who is noted as never having come to US

If these records are true then it would be extremely difficult for there to be a Johannes b. Jan 1836 when there is another child Ragnhild b in June that same year.

Sounds like somebody grabbed some parents for Johannes without documentation and others simply copied. Where and when does this Johannes appear in public records and/or private records or stories?

Never mind - got him:

One Ancestry family tree has Johannes Pedersen Selsing (Valaker) b 1838 Norway d Waushara county, Wisconsin. Can't see enough to tell if same man.

Or try this tree, for John Sr. (Johan) Pedersen (Voliiker) Selsing born 06 March 1838 in Norway. Right guy?

The small village Selseng in Sogndal is left of the freshwaterlake Dalavatnet link

Selseng; Sels- means pasture houses and -eng means arable land

I have a feeling that Johnne Ole Selseng is not a child of Ole and Ragnild. In the trees that he is in, people cite other trees for their source. I think that somewhere the information was just copied without anyone finding the actual birth record in the archives. As I couldn't find one and it doesn't appear he emigrated to America, I think until I find the records I will just keep some notes in my notebook.

What a beautiful picture. Thank you.

Thanks to all of you for looking into this for me.

Ole Pedersen, Selseng and Ragnild Tostendatter with 5 children moved out of Sogndal in 1844, see #14-20.

I agree Sandra, Johannes seems likely to be from a different family.

A family tree on Ancestry.com (called mom2) says his parents are Peder Nilssen Valaker (who supposedly immigrated and lived in Silver Lake, Worth, Iowa in 1880) and wife Marte Larsdatter - and says Johannes was born 06 March 1838 in Hafslo. Here's a link to the cited record: 06 March 1838
Source: Sogn og Fjordane fylke, Hafslo, Ministerialbok nr. A 5 (1834-1852), Fødte og døpte 1838, side 26.

This tree alone (among several who list this Johannes) does not pick up the Sogndal parents (Ole and Ragnhild) as parents for Johannes.

More research would be needed to connect the dots; no citations or evidence in the mom2 tree are provided.

Einar - I thought that was the emigration record but it seemed a bit confusing.

The records in the parish registers show where they were moving, in the case of Ole and Ragnild it says "til Amerika" - other records may show destinations within Norway. The date was April 1. 1844.
If you like to call this emigration records, it's all up to you.
The children were Martha, Peder, Ragnild, Christi and Kari.

Ørnen left Bergen May 22 1844, headed by Capt. Groth.

On the page of this link there are four babies marked with an "X". I wonder what was being counted?

Would be interesting to figure out who is John Peterson Selsing - if the Johannes in Hafslo did indeed immigrate and live in Mount Morris/Wautoma, Waushara, Wisconsin. Perhaps his death record or marriage record or family stories made the link for mom2 (if she's correct). Ancestry.com database of land maps show John Selsing on a tract beside a lake southwest of Mount Morris (I didn't note the date). Adjacent is a tract owned by the "Selsing Brothers." In the vicinity are Tosten Selsing, Peter Selsing, and M Selsing. (May not be complete list.) Assigning John to Ole-Ragnhild was obviously tempting indeed. Kind of an odd coincidence since -or if - he's not theirs. I haven't looked further...

Here is a marriage of a John Selsing and a Mary in which his parents are named as Peter and Martha Selsing at Mount Morris:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XR2W-CR9

The previously mentioned story about Ole Pederson Selsing in Naeseth's directory mentions Ole's parents as Peder Iversen Heggestad and Martha Arnesdatter Selsing. Perhaps John is a younger brother (although the year gap in births is large: 1808 for Ole and 1831-1836-1838 for John)?

Here is the probable marriage of Peder Iverson and Martha (Marith) Arnesdatter. Occuring in 1797 really puts it almost out of reach for this couple to be the parents of both Ole and John:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NWZC-LXG

Here is the probable parents of Ole Pederson Selseng in the 1801 census. Martha is aged 36, married for the second time with two daughters from previous relationships:

Peder Iversen, Heggestad in Hafslo and widow Maritha Arnesdatter, Ølnæss in Sogndal were engaged Sept 29 1797, see top of right page.

- they are living at Ølnæss where Maritha came from. When their son Ole is born and baptized Sept 4 1808, they were living at Selseng, see 1st baptism left page.

Based on confirmation records, Ole seems to have been their only son.
