Hi! Im looking for information about my great great grandfather Haakon E Hansen who came to America from Oslo/Christiania in 1923 on the boat Hellig Olav. He was born in 1896 in Porsgrunn.
Did he get married and have kids? When did he die?
Where can I get more information, I dont know where to look.

Hi KaOls, the first step is always to develop as many identifiers as possible (relevant identifiers) about the known individual. You can save the forum searching for information you already have, including his full date of birth and full name -including middle name- and parents' names (these would appear in a USA death certificate). A 1923 Hellig Olav passenger manifest would have 2 pages and would include his destination and name of a person he's going to, in the US; the forum needs that info. Haakon should be findable, with the help of the additional info, in US World War II draft registration; these are archived at Ancestry.com. Names of his siblings could be relevant (for example, US travel records might show one of them travelling to visit him or join him). His occupation (stated on page 1 of the Hellig Olav manifest) is relevant. Sometimes immigrants returned home and lived near siblings (or not) so any family stories or info in that regard is relevant. -- Jane
Places to look: Ancestry.com - costs $ but you can get 14 days free trial. Family Search - free website Find a Grave - free website
Once a specific US location is known (from the passenger manifest) more databases apply. |

Thank you! I will see if I can gather more information and get back to you! If I gather all the information you asked for, is it any way you can find out more about him for me or do I have to go through a company?
He arrived at Ellis Island and the manifest said he was going to Brooklyn to see a friend!

I can't speak for others, but I bet the forum contributors will pitch in and search. (I can't help today.) Whether Haakon can be found, I don't know, but there's a good chance. If you don't have the information I mentioned, you'll get help with that as well. I only meant, post as much as you already know.
Awesome about Brooklyn!! Yes, the details in the records - all the small details - are like crumbs along the trail, leading to him. What was the name and address of the friend?
Brooklyn, Kings, New York had a large settlement of Norwegians. A free website to search is Italian Genealogical Group (it is not just for Italians). Link: http://italiangen.org/
The 1940 US census is the most current available census. It is free to search on Ancestry.com, for anyone, any time.
Green-wood Cemetery is the final resting place of many Norwegians in Brooklyn. Its website has a searchable index of burials.
Old Fulton Postcards free website indexes some historic New York newspapers. I think the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper might have an online index. |

Jane's candidate has a birthdate of 1 December 1896 but I was unable to find a Haakon Hanson with that birthdate in the 1910 Norwegian census. However there is this fellow with a birthdate of 12 Jan 1896 who was born in Skien:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01036517009439
Writing European style it might be possible to conflux the dates 1 Dec (US 12/1, Eur. 1.12) with 12 Jan ( US 1/12, Eur. 12.1). Skien is in Telemark fylke as is Porsgrunn.
This is probably the same man in the WWII "old man" draft registration cards, born 12 Jan 1896 at "Skisen" (which might be an interpretation of Skien):

Thank you all for all information, Im so excited!! His middle name is probably Einar because his son who where born in Norway was named Einar. When he left Norway he was married to Aagot Hansen and had 3 sons. They never came over.
Im soooo excited!
A relative thought he left Norway in May, but it might have been October. My grandmother said she heard a rumour that he was a painter!
I have found boat manifests for both may 1st and october 16th but not october 5th that digitalarkivet says.
The Haakon E Hansen from Bøler/Gjerpen can be the one :) I will try to find out his full birth date. |
