Hi! Viggo Valtyrson was my grandfather.
His daughter, Elin Oddrun is my mother.
I would love to find out more about my grandfather. I didn't get to know him, he passed away when I was young. My grandmother used to tell us stories about living on the farm when she was young, and living in Alesund during the war. My mom could probably put you in touch with relatives in Norway (there are lots of them)!
Let me know if I can help.

Hope you can connect with jensen90, who may have stories of your grandfather in Norway. Click on his username to send an email directly to him.
Birth of Viggo Sofus 01 April 1914: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070308650085.jpg Source: Møre og Romsdal fylke, Borgund i Borgund, Klokkerbok nr. 528C13 (1898-1918), Fødte og døpte 1914, side 189.
Birth record above says Viggo's parents were Stefan Valtyrson b 1873 and Klara b 1884, residing at Fiskerstrand?
An Ancestry.com family tree says Stefan was born in Iceland about 1880 - no other information - and "Klara Hole" was born about 1890 in Norway - no other information; Viggo is the only child noted on the tree.
Information posted on Find-a-Grave: Viggo Sofus Waltersen born 01 April 1914 died September 1968 Bellingham, Whatcom County, Washington, USA AND Ingrid S Waltersen born 1913 died 2006 Both buried Greenacres Memorial Park in Ferndale, Whatcom, Washington http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=123951555

Yes, the above must be Viggo's dad, because Stefan's burial recorded on DIS-Norge gives same birth date of 29 September 1873, see below.

Viggo Valtyrson was injured at Sund on Hemnesøy, Nordland, on May 11th, 1940. He got shrapnel in his lungs during a fight against 14 Germans who had been dropped on the island by a German airplane a few days earlier. Company Ellinger which Viggo was a part of, was headed towards the island to "take care of" the Germans. It was too risky to do perform an operation out in the fields, so Viggo continued the battle with the shrapnel in his lungs.
Several books about the battle have been written. |

Steffen Valtyrson and Klara Rasmusdatter, Hole were married Oct 24 1912, see #30.
Steffen was born Sept 29 1873 on Island and his father was Valtyr Valtyrson.
Klara was born Sept 9 1884 at Hole in Synnulven and her father was Rasmus Arnesen. |

Very interesting about the battle at Sund on Hemnesøy. A book that mentions it: Hitler's Pre-emptive War: The Battle for Norway, 1940 Link
Below, marriage of Viggo's paternal grandparents.
Iceland, Select Marriages (from Ancestry.com) [Iceland = Island] Marriage Date: July 1874 Marriage Place: Klippstadur, Nordur-Mulasysla, Iceland Valtyr Valtyrsson Spouse: Helga Rustikusdr Family History Library (FHL) Film Number: 73849
Below, two more siblings for Viggo's dad Stefan Valtyrsson.
Iceland, Select Baptisms (from Ancestry.com) Valtyr Valtyrsson Spouse: Helga Rustikusdr Child: Jacob Valdemar Valtyrsson [an index-only record with no additional information, no date, no place]
Iceland, Select Baptisms again; no additional info Valtyr Valtyrsson Spouse: Helga Rustikusdr Child: Joffina Ingibjorg Valtyrsson
Here is Klara Rasmusdatter in the 1900 Norway census, working as a servant girl at Hole: Link
Marriage 24 October 1912 of Stefan and Klara, as posted: Link
I believe Klara's mother was Beate Petrine Klausdatter; she married Rasmus Arnesen 12 July 1880 in Sunnylven. Ancestry lists more "index-only" records with too little info but seemingly Klara had siblings Oline, Karen Marie, and Rakel.
About Valtyrson - in the Iceland records I viewed the name is sometimes spelled Valtýrsson.
This might be the birth of Valtyr Valtyrsson - Valtyr being the father of Viggo's father Stefan: Name: Valtir Valtyrsson Gender: Male Birth Date: 06 Aug 1834 Baptism Date: 10 Aug 1834 Baptism Place: Klippstadur, Nordur-Mulasysla, Iceland Father: Valtir Magnusson Mother: Sophia Aradr FHL Film Number: 73849
Valtir born 1834 seems to have siblings Skuli and Magnus. I'm looking at "index-only" records on Ancestry.com - little info is provided.
I think Nordur-Mulasysia would be Norður-Múlasýsla in Icelandic.
Iceland, Select Marriages (from Ancestry.com) Name: Valtir Magnusson Gender: Male Marriage Date: 17 Oct 1837 Marriage Place: Klippstadur, Nordur-Mulasysla, Iceland Spouse: Sophia Arnadr FHL Film Number: 73849

Do you know if your grandfather recieved the Defence Medal before he em. 1948. If not, you can send an inquiry to the Norwegian Ministry of Defence link
Still some are forgotten, espesially those who em. Some recieved the medal this year in connection with the 70-years piece celebration of 1945

Wow, thank you very much!
This is an amazing amount of information, I've shared this forum with my mom. We now have a better grasp on where to start searching.
As far as the Defence Medal, we're not sure. From what I understand, he threw away everything he had that was connected to the war. That is one of the things my mom is interested in learning on her trip to Norway this month.
Everyone here has been more than kind in finding this information!
