Hello Kåre et all! It's been years but I'm back... I'm on a mission to find where my 5 times great-grandfather Kristian Kristiansen Toe or Jore is buried.
There are records showing he came to the US with his son in 1852 from the Toe farm in Gransherad, Norway. I have also found some documents showing that his wife (Anne Hem) died and was buried in the Scandinavia Cemetery in Scandinavia, WI shortly after they immigrated. But I have no luck finding her grave stone. He remarried and lived on his son's farm in Iola, WI until1893. I found his second wife's stone at Hitterdahl Lutheran Church cemetery in Iola, WI, but no stone for Kristian.
The Gransheradsoga says that he moved to Hem farm in Sauland with no official mention of him emigrating to the US.
So...i'm wondering if his first wife and later he were send back to Norway to be buried with family? Did this happen back then to first generation immigrates?
How do I find out if he was buried on Hem or at the local parish?
Thanks everyone...glad to be back on the forum.

There might be a time when a body could be returned for burial but not likely during the early times. Indeed, if someone happens to die on the voyage before refrigeration, they are consigned to the sea. |

I figured this would be the case since the travel across the land to get to the east coast would take forever, never mind the sail over the Atlantic. The only other possibility is that he did return to Norway after wife 2 had died? She passed 1886 he passed in 1893. In our family records it does state he made several trips back to Norway.
Thanks jkmarler. |

Hello Heidi.
The only possibility is that he died in Norway on a voyage. There are two churches in Sauherad. The cemetery for the Hem people is Sauherad church where also so many of my ancestors are buried. Only headstones in stone are kept, mostly crosses were made of wood who disappeared after e few decades.

Is this a different person from the Kristian Toe you are seeking?
I wonder if you have seen the original of this record. The original is difficult to read but does indicate six deaths in 1893. There is a word directly above Christen's name that starts with Kr but I cannot read any more of the word. The Dodsdatum is difficult to read and seems to have been altered but probably says 7 April 1893. The Jordfæstelsdatum probably also reads 7 April 1893 but that has also been altered. Alder is listed as 85. Hvor dod and Hvor fodt are not readable by me.

The word is Kristiansen and relates to the Hilda Oline on the line above.
So Archives and Ancestry have traded Newspapers.com and the ELCA databases with each other! |
