We are now seeking information on Kornelius Sandnes, brother of Severin. We think he emigrated in about 1897 but cannot find him listed any place in the USA. We have family visiting from Norway and they think he might have settled in North Dakota or Montana. He died in 1908. Is there any record showing his death? Any help would be appreciated. Also concerning Serverin - he apparently went back and forth from Norway to USA at least 3 times. Are there any records kept showing his returns to Norway? |

Here is a good candidate for Kornelius, using the Hansen name. You did not give a birth year which would be helpful in this case. He is traveling to LaMoure North Dakota. See the list from Jackie in your post on Severin for a list of Sandness folks in LaMoure.
Kornelius Hansen in the Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935 Name: Kornelius Hansen Gender: Male Age: 18 Birth Year: abt 1879 Date of Arrival: 18 May 1897 Vessel: Carthaginian Search Ship Database: Search for the Carthaginian in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database Port of Arrival: Quebec, Quebec, Canada; Montreal, Quebec, Canada Port of Departure: Liverpool, England

I'm sorry that I didn't include the birth date for Kornelius. He was born 3 March 1880. There were 5 brothers in the family: Kornelius, born 3 March 1880; Severin, born 11 April 1884; Peter, born 28 December 1886; Johan, born 6 Jan 1889 and Hans, born Oct 1890. There was also the sister, Anne, born 16 August 1881. It is such a mystery of where Severin lived and why he went back and forth between Norway and USA. We think the first trip in 1905 was to his brother's Kornelius but we didn't know where he lived. We know that Peter, Hans and Anne all remained in the USA. We appreciate everyone's help! |

About records of Severin returning to Norway: As far as I know, the USA did not keep records of people leaving the country.
Original Churchbook Leaving Registration (Udflyttede) Registering to leave the parish (Syvde i Vanylven) in 1897, destination Amerika, Kornelius Peder Johan Hanssen Sandnæs, born 1880 1897 Møre og Romsdal fylke, Syvde i Vanylven, Ministerialbok nr. 502A03 (1885-1909), Utflyttede 1889-1899, side 240.
As posted in the earlier thread, Severin Johan Hansen Sandnæs traveling to his brother in North Dakota in 1905
And maybe you already talked about the brother Petter Hansen Sandnæs, headed to Lamour, North Dakota 1908
And the brother Johan Mathias Hansen Sandnæs, headed to Fargo, North Dakota 1908
And Hans Olaj Hansen Sandnæs, headed to family in Lemaure North Dakota 1911
And John again - Johan Hansen Sandnes born 6/1 1889 - destination North Dakota 1915
And Severin Hansen Sandness back again to Fargo, North Dakota 1915
Returning to America, Severin Johan Hansen Sandnes 1924
with Johan Mathias Hansen Sandnes 1924
Somewhat of a possibility that it may help to see their full names and emigration records grouped... |

Hans Olais 2nd wife, Martha Pedersdatter, was born Jan 4 1846 (not in 1848 as given other places), see #1. Her parents were Peder Paulsen and Mette Andersdatter, Aaram.

There appears to be no listing for a Kornelius /or Charley Sandness in the transcriptions of headstones published by RRVGS nor on find a grave. Also did not find him in the ELCA funerals database at archives.com |

The people that Kornelius was living with in 1900 Census were Mathias Sandness and his wife. They lived in LaMoure County North Dakota in 1900, In 1910 they lived in Logan County,In 1920 US Census back in LaMoure County North Dakota. And In 1925 North Dakota Census in LaMoure County again and still there in the 1940 Census.
Looking at the WWI Draft Registration Card shows his birth date as 18 Mar 1878. So this is likely his baptism record. His father is listed as Adam Adamsen and mother is Anne Pedersdatter. They are listed as on the Sandness farm. Must have been a big farm.

Probably Adam Adamsen in the 1865 Norwegian Census, maybe his first wife?
