Hi. My g-g grandfather was Joseph Lawson (b. 1862 in Norway). He immigrated to the United States in 1885 where he resided in Norwalk, CT. He died on December 5, 1930 in East Norwalk, CT. Does anyone know how I can find out where in Norway he came from? According to the census both of his parents were also from Norway.
Something I found interesting about my research into the census records regarding a Joseph Lawson from Norway was that there was another Joseph Lawson from Norway also living in Norwalk around the same time. The other Joseph Lawson gave a birth date of 1858 and immigrated just 5 years prior in 1880 to the U.S. This Joseph Lawson said that his father was Scottish and his mother was Norwegian.
However, I am primarily interested in finding out information about the Joseph Lawson (b. 1862, d. 1930) from Norway, whose both parents were from Norway and whom died in Norwalk, CT. |

Census-1900 says Joseph was born March 1861, and immigrated in 1884. Wife Mary, and children James (11), John M (9) and Mary J (7).
Have you found their marriage certificate? Or birth certificate of their children?
If you have seen other spellings of his name, that would be of interest. Because for sure,his name was not Joseph Lawson in Norway. But probably something similar. And early American records could show the Norwegian spelling...
Did some of his closest relatives live in the US? Brother, sister, parents? |

Searching NHDC Norwegian Census 1865 for Josef orJoesef Larsen born 1860 to 1863 turns up none.
Searching Joseph Larsen born 1860 to 1863 turns up only one

Peter, you should understand that this is a long shot in the dark and what you need is some more info related to your ancestor that establishes a firm birth date ie day, month, year and/or a place where your ancestor emmigrated from in Norway.

The wife of Joseph Lawson was named Mary Ann McSally or McSalley born abt 1862 in Northern Ireland. On the census page mentioned by Jan Peter are her two brothers Michael and Patrick Mcsally and their families.
Father Michael McSalley also emigrated to and passed away in Connecticut

Sorry not a good candidate a further looks shows voyage in 1901 so age puts him way out of contention. |

Did Joseph Lawson become a naturalized American citizen? If he did there is a chance that his naturalization application and/or final papers may record where in Norway he was from - perhaps even original name spelling.
Look for a church congregation where he attended after he emigrated. Notes about members of the congregation, especially new members, kept by the minister can often list where they had been originally baptised and/or confirmed. |

My Great Grandfather was Joseph Lawson. I came across your post on Norway Heritage when I was trying to find out more about him.
My mother was his grand daughter and her maiden name was Lawson. We all grew up in Norwalk, CT.
Unfortunately, all I know about his ancestry is he immigrated around 1880-1885 and both his parents were from Norway.
Have you learned anything else about Norway?

Lawson, in and of itself is not a Norwegian name. The most common name which became Lawson in North America was Larson. So here are all Joseph Larson b 1860-1865 in the 1865 Norwegian census:

Have you got Joseph's exact date of birth? Have you got his death certificate or his obituary? These last two might have information about Joseph which would allow further study.

Jkmarler- Thank you so much for replying to my post. I really appreciate it.
My mother was a Lawson and I am very close to the whole family. We all lived in Norwalk, Ct. I've done a lot of research on ancestry but can not get any more information on my great-grandfather, Joseph Lawson.
At one point I wondered if they were Scottish and just living in Norway but I now do not think so because on the 1930 census it states he speaks Norwegian.
I will try to follow up on the Joseph Larsen 1861 you listed.
What does this say? "Ørlands Prgj. deres Søn ug Ørland: Ryggen m Folketelling 1865 for 1621P Ørland prestegjeld" ?
What I know:
Joesph Lawson (Can not find a middle name)
Birthdate March 1861 Norway
Parents both born in Norway
Immigration Year 1884 (Another census shows 1885)
Naturalization Record Oct 20, 1896 Sweden & Norway
Married Mary Ann McSally- (many children including my grandfather)
Newspaper Obituary Died Dec 5, 1930 (No other info)
Gravestone - 1856-1930 in St John's Cemetery, Norwalk Ct (No other info)

| Thank you for all this information. I know just as much as Ms. Spahr does. kspahr is my 2nd cousin, once removed. I had lost my password and did not foresee so many posts to this forum. I have specific questions about some McSally descendants for Ms. Spahr. |
