Thanks to all for your assistance. Sorry for the delay but I have been laid up a few days with a rib injury.

Kristen is probably the first of the Garthe family according to the following link. I know he was in Norway in 1865 Census and was in Leelanau Michigan in 1870 US Census so the 1868 is feasible.
Emigrants from "Surendalen" listed on the passenger manifest for the sailing ship "JOHAN", signed by H. Hansen, May 12, 1868:
Norsk versjon <http://www.valentinosmountain.com/profile/article/nii-1-de-frste_203.htm> THE FIRST Kristen Isakson Garte must have been the instigator and "architect" behind the start of the emigration from the Stangvik/Surnadal region. He ran a shipping business along the European coast and may have operated as far as the Mediterranean region. His boat was called the "Synja" and, according to Ida Edahl in Northport, was sold in order to buy Gartrønningan.

From the reference I gave above (wish I could edit post)
I had been searching in New York (Castle Garden) looking for their Port of entry on the Johan so I am glad you found the landing in Canada of that ship.
Thank you |

Christen Isachsen Garthe seems to have been a man of great energy. He studied Navigation, Astrology, Philosophy and Astronomi. His father was a sailor and fisherman.
Christen Isachsen was tall and strong, at age 18 he was 6`2" and weight 240 Pound. People said he had the strenght as a Norwegian horse. Before he. em. he was injured in his back when a load of wood turned over him in a steep hillside.
On the barn door at Gartherønningen you can still se the carvings of sailships made by his son Isach.
One of the reasons he em. was because he did not get well along with his stephmother described as an "angry" lady.
A picture of him down left (De første Nordmøre-USA) and more info in this link
