Can you tell me whether Esten Oleson Nygard ever lived here. On a photo from the Estenson Centemnnial in Minnesota 1871-1971 it says that Ole Estenson Nygard was born here, but then it says it was taken in Tynset. But several sources say this photo is from Bardu while the photo says it was taken in Fadalen. Ole was born between 1820 and 1825, and came to America in 1857. It does look like Kari Olsdotter moved to Troms with her husband whose last name was Jorgenson. She was a daughter of Ole Estenson, and was the sister of Esten Oleson Nygard.

The various names repeat through the generations, but perhaps this is the Kari Olsdatter you mean, on a GENI family tree:

Here they are on Stenvold in Målselv in 1865 census:

Kari is listed as born in Tønsæt, an old name for Tynset:

From Østerdalen it was a large migration to Bardu, Målselv and surrounding areas that started 1791.
The area in inner Troms was almost uninhabited and they were settlers as those who em. to America.
The climate are good in the summer, but the winter can be very cold.
They have kept most of the dialect from Østerdalen.

The Geni tree tells Kari died in Målselv, that is correct.

Målselv 1900
Kari Olsdatter (Faadalen) lived as G. grandmother, "Føderaadsenke" widow and former ovner of farm Stenvold Øvre taken over by her son Johan Mathisen, married to Marit, two daughters and a son and two grandchildren .

Målselv has one of the best salomofishing rivers in Norway.

That is so interesting Kåre!
I hope the GENI tree creator sees your correction to Kari birth date.
I still guess that tree shows the right Kari that bbecktynset meant, but Kari is listed with wrong birth date and place. The tree may have still more errors; we haven't verified it.

Comparing with Viken in Bardu in this map I believe this is the Wiegen (Viken) farm in Bardu even the houses are dif. the location seems ok comparing with the photo.

Enter the map, spell Vikland Bardu and the map will take you to the neighbor farm to Viken.
In the old picture you will see the bay in front of the narrow headland with the river on the other side, and when you zoom out you will see the two mountains across the river as in the picture.
A curiosity; I spend 9 months in the army in this area
