Hi,
I am looking for possible relatives and info on where my grandfather might have been born.

He was Gunnar Knudsen Torp from Lista, Farsund Norway. This is in the Vanse region.

I also wanted to try to find where the torp farm used to be in that area.

His father was Teodor Knudsen Torp.

Thanks for the help,
-Mike

Here is your Theodor Knudsen Torp on the Torp farm in Farsund in census-1910. Theodor is born 27 May 1873 and he is living with his older sister Kristine Amalie. Theodor later married a woman named Ulla, from Skien, Telemark.
Children of Theodor & Ulla:
1. Katrine, b. 1912 -> USA.
2. Ester Marie, (14.05.1914 - 28.04.1998). Married to painter Werner Otto Lichtenberg (1903-1987). -> To Rekefjord, Sokndal, Rogaland.
3. Knut, b. 1915 -> USA
4. Phyllis, b. 1917 -> USA
5. Gunnar, b. 1919 -> USA
6. Adolf, b. 1921 -> USA
7. Elisabeth, -> USA

Theodor died in New York in 1946, after living there for many years.
The Torp farm was sold in 1949 to Sigurd Solberg.

WOW!! You guys are incredible!

I do have a question however,
I have listed in my records that Teodor Alfred Knudsen Torp was married to Maren Regina Gulbrandsdatter.
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=60092&h=5897035&ssrc=pt&tid=53056225&pid=13450879304&usePUB=true

I must have gotten the wrong record. Am I right?

Correction, not married to (in fact his wife was UIlla Vilhelmina Ringstrom from Skein as you stated), but his mother was Maren Regina. Is this wrong? Or could his father have remarried? Or maybe a different Teodor Knudsen baptized days after the correct Teodor was born? The plot thickens. This is so interesting to me. Thank you all for helping me!!!

Hi michaelrodriguez, the trick is to amass USA records and Norway records and the two should "match." Of course, there are always mistakes and discrepancies, but basically we're looking for matches in USA and Norway records. Do you have Theodor's death record? Or naturalization papers? Or anything that states his birth date?

1900 Norway Census - Theodor is already grown and gone.

1900 on Torp, in Vanse
Knud Andreas Knudsen 1827 Vanse herred* Hf g Gaardbruger selveier b
Anne Katrine Nilssen 1834 Vanse herred* Hm g Gaardbrugerkone b
Nikolai Severin Knudsen 1866 Vanse herred* S ug Styrmand b
Nikolai is a seaman.

jwiborg,
You may have mentioned this, but where are you getting this amazing info from? Is it online? And the book "Gard og folk", Farm history book for Farsund, is this available for purchase or to view online?

I would like to find out more about teodor's sister Kristine Amalie (was she ever married?)

Also the surname Hananger, is that a farm name? Any idea where that is? I will follow up with my own research, but you have found out more in a few minutes than I have found out in years of research. Thank you so much!

JaneC,
The info you are providing is amazing too! I didn't mean to ignore you I am very sorry.
The info you provided about his parents is super!

I actually ran across the same record in the digital archives but had no connection to teodore with these names. Now I kjnow they are his parents, that makes a lot of sense. I actually did find the gravestone online too. Thank you! It was the key I needed to get his birth day correct. I did not see the 1905 migration record. Where did you find that? You guys obviously have a tremondous amount of experience researching Norwegian records. My family is very mixed ( as you can see from my last name) so i have had to learn history and research techniques for various countries. i am just starting to get a little better with norwegian records. And my norwegian is improving a little. Thanks again for all the help!!

Love the last name. No worries.
;D
Wondering what database or other umbrella source was used is a good question. I returned to my posts and added that.

Couple sites we haven't yet used:

Italian Genealogy Group website for historic births, marriages, deaths, NYC area (not just for Italians)
Link

Illinois Cyberdrive Genealogy Records
Link

You have this - but here for the thread is a Family Search link for the exact birth dates of children of Knud Andreas Knudsen and Ane Catrine Nilsdatter.
Link

Since Kristine Amalie b 20 Dec 1868 is said to have gone to USA, she may be in Illinois, where her brother Christian is (and maybe others)?

The book I refered to was Volume 2 of Listaboka:
Title: Listaboka Volume II, Gard og folk
Author: Kåre Rudjord
Published: 1981

Due to copyright licenses, the book is only available online from Norway. It is available for purchase and should be available for rental from a genealogy library.

Regarding Hananger: You should look at the map and make yourself familiar with the neighboring farms to Torp. If you look at the above map, you will see the Hananger lake to the left of the Torp farm. And on the other side of the lake, you will see the Hananger district and farm.
