A book which was in my mother's library titled Fuglene I Farger published by H. Aschehoug & Co, Oslo, 1976 has the personal gift inscription on the inside "Til Hugh J. McLean
jula 1977
fra
familiane I Nord-Norge"

I'm not sure when or where my mother got the illustrated bird book but we are coming up on the 15th anniversary of her passing so it was some time ago. Mom was a "junker" attending auctions, second-hand stores, new-to-you shops, rummage sales and finer antiques stores buying the beautiful things which struck her mind wherever she found them.

My mother's hometown from 1966-2000 was Grand Forks, North Dakota but after her retirement in 1993 or so she and my dad travelled by car to New England, to Washington state, to Illinois and the state of Nebraska, so she could have picked the book on any of those trips.

So we have a name and a date and a place which is usually enough to unlock a genealogical mystery. Who is Hugh J. McLean and what is his Norway connection?
