I'm researching my family that lived in the garden Herfindal in the 1700's. I also have family surnames from Bruvik and Saedalen. Does anyone have the Evangerboka or Samnangerboka that could takes some pictures or scan some pages about the history/genealogies in the those areas? I have a few names from my family tree to help with the search:
Olav Johanneson Herfindal 1714-1798 m. Kari Mikkelsdatter 1703-1773 -Knut Olavsen Herfindal 1736-?
Erik Nilsson Saedal 1709-1798 -Ana Eriksdtr 1743-1830
Nils Knutson Kvitingen 1688-1756
Torres Baesseson Fossmark 1584-1670 (born and died Bruvik)
If you can help me find farm locations or genealogy lists, I'd really appreciate the help! I plan to visit Vaksdal in 2021 and would love to visit family farm locations. Thanks for reading! |

Thanks for the website! I used google translate to get some really great information. Question though, Could you help me figure out which link to use for Haus? I went through the main bands and subtitles but can't find one with the label. Is Haus bigger or smaller than Bruvik? I found an area called "Bruvrik" but no farmland called Haus. Some of the text mentioned that Haus is somewhere in pages 350-360, but I couldn't tell of which bands since it didn't have it's own section. Hope that made sense...do you have any thoughts?
The Herfindal and Saedal sections were incredibly insighful. I just have one ancestor that moved to from Saedalen to Romslo/Haus and then to the US. If I can prove that ancestor was in Romslo in the 1800's, then my herfindal ancestry is verified :) |

There are bygdebooks for Haus, but I don't think they are included on this site. I don't have the resources to check it out where I am right now. Perhaps somebody else can? |

If the Geni-tree above is correct, we are related. Besse Tørreson (1623-1694) who lived at Fossmark and later at Skreien/Skreiæ, was one of my ancestors. The Geni-tree has your Tørres Besseson Vaksdal as his father, but the bygdebook covering Fossmark says nothing about this (as far as I have discovered), and I notice that I have left the space for his parents empty in my own tree. I will take a fresh look at it when I get back from vacation.
EDIT: There are some issues with this tree. It says that Tørres Besseson's father was a man with the same name as himself, born the same year, but the list of sons given in the tree is in line with info given in the piece about Vaksdal farm in the bygdebook; about 25 lines below the headline BRUKARAR FØR 1750 here.
So we may be tenth cousins or thereabout, i.e. slightly less related than I am to my wife... |

You probably refer to Olav Jonsson Sedalen (1832- 1869) and Kari Arnesdtr. Herfindalen (1835- 1906) who lived at Sedalen and later at Romslo. The piece about Sedalen refers to page 356 in a bygdebook for Haus. I have this volume, and the info on the pair there is consistent with that in Vaksdal bygdebok, but adds nothing. The only reference to USA is that the son Ådne emigrated, mentioned in both books. |

Here is the family in the 1865 census, still living at Sedalen. Sætherdal/Seterdal/Setersdal is the same as Sedal, and Ådne is a dialect form of Arne.
The same family (father deceased) in 1875, now living at Romslo.
Emigration (church record) of Ungk. (bachelor) Aadne Olsen Sæterdal (b. 1861) in 1882. (#8) |

Aadne's (Arne's) birth and baptism on Feb. 13 and Mar. 3 1861 (#27) and confirmation in 1875 (bottom). |
